John William Waterhouse Art for Sale at Auction

Painter, b. 1849 - d. 1917

Born in 1849, in Rome, but raised in England, John William Waterhouse grew up assisting his painter father and developing his own art in the studio. He was accepted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1870, training there in the classical style. However, he returned to Italy often, drawing inspiration from the Italian's Pre-Raphaelite artwork. John Will Waterhouse's paintings embraced the tenants of this movement, including a rejection of Victorian subjects.

Oil paintings by John William Waterhouse instead focus on beautiful but tragic female figures. Despite opposing convention, John William Waterhouse's artwork enjoyed massive success in England, and his Pre-Raphaelite paintings for sale were purchased by the influential Henry Tate, founder of Tate galleries. Collectors can find vintage oil paintings for sale online and at auction and pick up their next masterpieces.
