Double-sided card (280x130 mm; 5x11 inches) on glossy stock, reading on recto "Divine and Tab Hunter in Polyester, filmed in Odorama. Smelling is Believing," with an illustration of the two stars, and with 10 unused pink scratch and sniff stickers on verso; vertical folds, moderate foxing; signed by Waters underneath the portraits. No place, circa 1981. The film's viewers were told "Do not scratch until you received instructions from the film." The ten smells are said to include flatulence, pizza, skunk, and dirty shoes. We don't discern any odor, but then we haven't given the stickers a good scratch yet, either. With -- a flier for a screening of Polyester at the Fine Arts Work Center, 280x215 mm; 11x8½ inches; worn and foxed with 4 holes where mounted; illustrated with images of Waters and Divine. [Provincetown, MA], Friday 17 January [1986?].

Through the removal of context, each of these images become abstract and ominous. John Waters (American, b. 1946) Filmmaker, visual artist and writer John Waters rose to prominence in the 1970s, with his transgressive cult films. As his filmmaking career progressed, Waters’ work took on a more mainstream sensibility. His best-known films include Hairspray (1988), Cry-Baby (1990), and Serial Mom (1994). In the early 1990s, Waters began to create installation art, sculpture and photo-based projects. Frequently humorous and campy, his works have been exhibited at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA, and the Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, MO. Very good condition Provenance: Acria, New York Outtakes from various films and television shows, this group of 3 unique c-prints by John Waters demonstrate the artist's alertness to hidden narratives, heightened by taking images out of context. Through the removal of context, each of these images become abstract and ominous. Executed in 2011, each of the three chromogenic prints are framed and matted, with the images measuring 4 x 6 inches. All edges of photos visible, not examined out of frame. Excellent, original condition. John Waters (American, b. 1946) Filmmaker, visual artist and writer John Waters rose to prominence in the 1970s, with his transgressive cult films. As his filmmaking career progressed, Waters' work took on a more mainstream sensibility. His best-known films include Hairspray (1988), Cry-Baby (1990), and Serial Mom (1994). In the early 1990s, Waters began to create installation art, sculpture and photo-based projects. Frequently humorous and campy, his works have been exhibited at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA, and the Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, MO.
