Signed lower right "Mrs. Susan C Waters" and again on the back of the canvas "Mrs. Susan C. Waters / Bordentown, NJ." Retains a label on frame (now detached) reading "Fine Art Pictures and Framing / JOHN WANAMAKER / PHILADELPHIA / PARIS / NEW YORK / LONDON / ORDER 5151." Housed in a later gilt frame. Second half 19th century. 24" x 36" sight, 30" x 42" OA.

(51.4 x 41cm) Illegibly signed 'Waters' bottom right, oil on canvas 20 1/4 x 16 1/8 in. (51.4 x 41cm) Provenance Property from the Estate of Angela Gross Folk, New Jersey. The relined canvas in overall fair condition, with faint hairline craquelure visible throughout the surface of the work. Examination under UV light reveals that some of the aforementioned craquelure is inpainted. See for example at upper left corner, extending onto the cat and in the bottom right corner. Some more restoration at center left in between the cat and the two squirrels (on the background) and at bottom left corner. With broad inpainting on the two squirrels at center (the face of the one on the right is intact as well as part of its tail, the other squirrel is heavily retouched in comparison). Localized inpainting on some of the buckets at bottom right quadrant, with loose inpainting on most of the raspberries as well. See Specialist's pictures for more details.         Susan Waters Bucolic Sheep Landscape Painting

        New Jersey, New York 1823-1900 Depicts a heard of sheep in a clearing surrounded by distant mountain ranges and dense forest. Waters is well known for her folk art portraits as well as her paintings of animals, she was self taught but earned her tuition at a female seminary school by producing natural history works for one of her instructors. Later when Waters married her husband William Waters, he encouraged her to continue painting. She became an itinerant painter of still lives, animals, and portraits with sheep becoming one of her favorite subjects. Waters has works in the collections of the New York State Historical Association, Wiltshire College, Newark Museum, Cortland County Historical Society, and the Arnot Art Museum.

William and his half-brother Abraham Waters (1821-1908) shared the same father, John Waters. Abraham Waters had four daughters, one being Adaline Olinda Waters, who acted as Susan's executrix upon her death. Abraham's oldest daughter, Olive Othelia Waters, married William James Willis in 1876. They had two sons, Karl and Ralph Emerson Willis. Karl died young in 1910, and Ralph (1879-1963) had a son named Karl Emerson Willis (1919-1988). Karl married Florence Jean Willis (1925-1999), and they had three children: William E., Stephanie L., and Michael B. Willis. The three siblings inherited this painting after their mother's passing in 1999.
