Doreen Station, north-west of Alice Springs circa 1925, Judy Watson grew up in the vast Warlpiri country that lies between the Tanami and Gibson deserts. Her traditional nomadic life came to an end when the Warlpiri were forced to live in the new government settlement at Yuendumu. Years later, following the birth of her ten children amid great struggles living under European colonisation, the influence of those early years in the land of her ancestors burst forth in her art. Her principal focus was the women’s Dreaming of the Karnta-kurlangu – a large number of ancestral women who danced across the land, creating important sites, discovering plants, foods, and medicines, as well as establishing the ceremonies that would perpetuate their generative powers. At Mina Mina, these ancestral women danced and performed ceremonies before travelling on to Janyinki and other sites as they moved east toward Alcoota. During their ritual dancing, digging sticks rose up out of the ground and the women carried these implements with them on their long journey east, singing and dancing all the way without rest. The hairstring is anointed with red ochre and is a secret and sacred connection between the women's ceremony and the country, which enables them to connect with the spirit of the Dreaming. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

In the Dreamtime women are dancing here and digging sticks rose up out of the ground. Majardi are pubic coverings made of hairstring spun on a spindle, worn by women at times of ceremony. These are depicted at the sides of this painting. The central motif is the ngalyipi vine, a rope-like creeper used as a ceremonial wrap around the forehead and arms. The circles are jintiparnti, native truffle collected by the women at Mina Mina. This is a very big Jukurrpa that travels beyond the borders of Walpiri country." As they danced, they have been picking snake vine to make shoulder straps to put around the coolamon and they were picking Jintiparnta - native truffle, and putting it in the coolamon. The "U" shapes depict the women, the "O" shapes depict the Jinitparnta, the "oval" shapes depict the coolamon and the interwoven lines depict the snake vines.

In this large scale and the most ambitious painting of her career, Judy Watson Napangardi depicts the Snake Vine, Ngalyipi, sacred to Napangardi and Napanangka women. Born at Mt Doreen Station, Judy Watson has made many trips back to Mina Mina and Yingipurlangu, her ancestral country on the border of the Tanami and Gibson Deserts, with her family. She was taught to paint by her elder sister Maggie Napangardi Watson and painted alongside her at Warlurkurlangu artists for a number of years, developing her own unique style. Judy birthed ten children and is a woman of a prodigious energy that is transmitted in her vibrant paintings through a dynamic use of colour and her energetic dragged dotting style. The style has been said to mimic the movement of women as they dance, and in particular, the movement of the Kantakulangu ancestors who danced through Mina Mina on their epic journey in the Dreamtime. The Central motif is Ngalyipi (Tinospora smilacina) or Snake Vine, which grows along the trunks and boughs of the Desert Oak. The vine is used to strap coolamons to the body when laden with bush tucker; as a tourniquet; and for a number of other uses as well as its role in important women's ceremonies.

JUDY NAPANGARDI WATSON born c.1925 MINA MINA JUKURRPA, 2015 synthetic polymer paint on canvas 122.0 x 121.0 cm bears inscription verso: artist’s name, size and Warlukurlangu Artists cat. 2095/15 PROVENANCE Warlukurlangu Artists, Yuendumu, Northern Territory Private collection, Melbourne This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Warlukurlangu Artists which states: ’This ’Jukurrpa’ (Dreaming) comes from Mina Mina, a very Important women’s Dreaming site far to the west of Yuendumu near Lake Mackay and the WA border. The ’klrda’ (owners) of this Dreaming are Napangardi/Napanangka women and Japangardl/Japanangka men; the area is sacred to Napangardi and Napanangka women. There are a number of ’mulju’ (water soakages) and a ’malurl’ (clay pan) at Mina Mina. In the Dreamtlme, ancestral women danced at Mina Mina and ’karlangu’ (digging sticks) rose up out of the ground. The women collected the digging sticks and then travelled on to the east, dancing, digging for bush tucker, collecting ’ngalyipl’ (snake vine [Tinospora smllaclna]), and creating many places as they went. ’Ngalylpi’ Is a rope-like creeper that grows up the trunks and limbs of trees, Including ’kurrkara’ (desert oak [Allocasuarlna decalsneana]). It is used as a ceremonial wrap and as a strap to carry ’parraja’ (coolamons) and ’ngaml’ (water carriers). ’Ngalylpi’ is also used to tie around the forehead to cure headaches, and to bind cuts. The women stopped at Karntakurlangu, Janyinki, Parapurnta, Kimayi and Munyuparntiparnti, sites spanning from the west to the east of Yuendumu. When they stopped, the women dug for bush foods like ’jintiparnta [desert] truffle [Elderia arenivaga]. The Dreaming track eventually took them far beyond Warlpiri country. The track passes through Coniston in Anmatyerre country to the east, and then went on to Alcoota and Aieron far to the northeast of Yuendumu and eventually on into Queensland. In Warlpiri paintings, traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa and other elements. In many paintings of this Jukurrpa, sinuous lines are used to represent the ’ngalyipi’ (snake vine), concentric circles are often used to represent the ’jintiparnta [dessert truffles] that the women have collected, while straight lines can be used to depict the ’karlangu’ (digging sticks).’ © Judy Napangardi Watson/Copyright Agency 2023 This work is located in our Melbourne Gallery This work is in excellent, stable and original condition.

Born on Mt. Doreen Station, north-west of Alice Springs, circa 1925, Judy Watson grew up in the vast Warlpiri country that lies between the Tanami and Gibson deserts. Her traditional nomadic lifestyle came to an end, however, when the Warlpiri were forced to live in the new government settlement at Yuendumu. Years later, following the birth of her ten children amid great struggles living under European colonisation, the influence of those early years in the land of her ancestors burst forth in her art. Her principal focus was the Women’s Dreaming of the Karnta-kurlangu – a large number of ancestral women who danced across the land, creating important sites, discovering plants, foods, and medicines, as well as establishing the ceremonies that would perpetuate their generative powers. At Mina Mina, these ancestral women danced and performed ceremonies before travelling on to Janyinki and other sites as they moved east toward Alcoota. During their ritual dancing, digging sticks rose up out of the ground and the women carried these implements with them on their long journey east, singing and dancing all the way without rest. The hairstring is anointed with red ochre and is a secret and sacred connection between the women's ceremony and the country, which enables them to connect with the spirit of the Dreaming.
