George Frederick Watts Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, Porträtmaler, Miniaturist, Etcher, b. 1817 - d. 1904

(b London, 1817; d Limerlease, England, 1904) British Painter. Watts was one of the most remarkable and versatile figures in Victorian art. During his long career of some seventy years, he made major contributions to history painting, the mural revival, portraiture, landscape, high Victorian classicism, symbolism, and the new sculpture. To put this in different words, no one did more to bridge the enormous gap between the age of Haydon and Etty and the dawn of modernism. He is not an easy artist; the moral allegories by which he set such store have proved particularly difficult for a twentieth-century audience, but taste seems to be changing. He was well represented in the exhibition “The Age of Rosetti, Burne-Jones and Watts: Symbolism in Britain 1860-1910”, mounted at the Tate Gallery last year, and for many he emerged as the star of the show. The object of the exhibition was to place British symbolism in a European context, and Watts lends himself to this treatment. His work was well known and much admired on the continent during his lifetime. (Credit: Christie’s, London, Impressionist and 19th Century Art, June 24, 1998, lot 33)

In a letter to Mrs Barrington dated August 1905, Mrs Shorter writes of the present lot:I had an interview with my aunt yesterday on the subject of the little picture of her father by the late Mr Watts. She informed me that she cannot quite remember the year in which it was painted but it was certainly not later than 1834.Mr Watts' father in those days was a piano tuner and used to go to Mr Richard Edmonds' house at New Cross to tune the pianos, during that time he was always talking of his son's great talent...Mr Edmonds wishing to encourage the young artist gave him a sitting. it was not signed at the time of painting but 5 years ago Mr Watts recognised it as his work and kindly affined his signature'.The portrait was subsequently shown to Mr Richard Jeffries circa 1996/7 who confirmed the attribution. We are grateful to Richard Ormond for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.

I, p.16 as Brighton DownsThe present lot was painted in 1882 and exhibited the following year at the Grosvenor Gallery as Study on Brighton Downs, although the name Haystacks was already given to it when it was noticed briefly in a review in the Times, and Watts himself seems to have adopted this title later. No doubt the subject was one he had seen when travelling to or from the town, where he had a winter studio from 1876.Like so many of Watts's landscapes, Haystacks (Study on Brighton Downs) is astonishingly minimal. No other Victorian artist made more daring experiments of this kind; they are one of his work's most original aspects.Haystacks as a subject seem to have been a constant source of wonder and inspiration to Watts. The picture is reminiscent of Evening (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), a small panel of 1864 in which he introduced some examples he had seen in the vicinity of Little Holland House, Kensington. However, unlike the Oxford picture which has overt literary associations; an armed knight is seen riding by, and the picture's alternative title, 'All the air a solemn stillness holds', taken from Thomas Gray's Elegy, this picture focuses attention on the haystacks alone. Characteristically though, Watts still manages to suggest a symbolist dimension. Stark as it is, the image has none of the objectivity of a painting of a haystack by for example, Monet.Watts must have thought highly of the picture to have sent it to the Grosvenor, and it was still in his possession when he lent it to the Royal Jubilee Exhibition at Manchester in 1887. He subsequently gave it to Sir Frederic Leighton, who had, according to Mrs Watts in her manuscript catalogue of her husband's works, 'admired' it. Leighton and Watts were not only close friends but neighbours in the artists' colony which had developed in the Holland Park area since the 1860s.When the picture appeared at Leighton's posthumous sale at Christie's in July 1896 it was bought by the dealer Sir William Agnew, who apparently wanted it for his own collection rather than stock. He still had it nine years later, when he lent it to the first two venues of the memorial exhibition which toured the country following Watts's death in 1904.

The title of this picture is taken from the Biblical story of the rich man who approached Christ asking to become a disciple. When told that he must first sell all his worldly possessions he had second thoughts, choosing to reject the spiritual life and retain his great accumulation of material goods. First exhibited in 1894, the work was one of a group in which Watts expressed his antagonism towards greed. While the composition indicates the man's psychological dilemma, it also focuses the viewer's attention on the rich fabric of his clothes. The handling of the paint consciously strives to imitate that of the great Venetian painters, most notably Titian.

Hawley. EXHIBITED: The Royal Academy, London, "Winter Exhibition, Works by the Late George Frederick Watts, R.A., O.M. and the Late Frederick Sandys," January 2-March 11, 1905, no 155, p. 27 (as Eve); Manchester City Art Gallery, Manchester, "G.F. Watts Memorial Exhibition," 1905. This work was donated to be sold to benefit the Dallas Museum of Art without restriction and was never included in the Dallas Museum of Art's permanent collection. Throughout the 1870s, George Frederick Watts experimented with increasingly complex surface textures, giving his work a bold and somewhat frenzied look. This early study for the figure of Eve in his dramatic work She Shall Be Called Woman (circa 1875-1892) in the Tate Britain offers a glimpse into the evolution of his expressive style. The final work in a series of three large paintings depicting the creation, temptation, and redemption of Eve, She Shall Be Called Woman underwent significant alteration during her conception. The present study depicts a more traditional figure; Eve stands contrapposto, the picture of a Renaissance-era heroine. Limiting his experiments to surface texture at this time, Watts still maintained figures informed by antiquity, and did not rework the position of the figure until the 1890s. This study hints at several aspects that remain in Watts' ultimate composition: Eve's gaze turned upward, and her cascade of extremely long hair, fanning out behind her and enveloping her shoulders like a golden cloud. The flora and fauna that appear more sparsely in the study are fully developed, surrounding Eve with doves and lilies, symbols of purity and fertility, alluding to her state of total innocence and her future role as mother of mankind. Perhaps most significant is the change to her footing. In the present work, Watts places Eve firmly on the ground. She is still clearly in the Garden of Eden but does not yet fully convey the force of nature that Watts wanted to depict. The final work shifts Eve to face the viewer directly, but with her body suspended in air, her feet floating just above the ground, her hands turned with one palm facing down, the other toward us. It gives the impression of an altogether different motif, that of the Assumption, imbuing the scene instead with a sense of otherworldliness. A dramatic shift to the ethereal that elevates Eve even as the contrast between the study and the final work highlight, and perhaps foreshadow, the contradictions present within the subject herself: Eve as an idea of perfect goodness, and Eve as a woman, with the distinct imperfections of humanity. (27cm x 37.5cm) Footnote: Note: L.G. Duke became a trustee of the Watts Gallery in 1933, replacing the late Lord Northbourne. The drawing appears to be a study for the figure of Adam in The Denunciation of Adam and Eve by G.F. Watts of which there are two painted versions, both in the collection of Watts Gallery. Both are illustrated in colour with a detailed entry in 'G F Watts; Victorian Visionary', Bills & Bryant, Yale University Press 2008.

George Frederic Watts (British 1817-1904)Portrait of Samuel Pepys Cockerell, Esq. (1844-1921)Oil on canvas 75 x 68.5cm (29½ x 26¾ in.)In the original Watts frame. Executed in 1880-1881. Provenance:Private Collection, Samuel Pepys CockerellBy descent to his daughter, Frederica Lucy CockerellBy family descent to the present ownerExhibited:London, Royal Academy, 1881, no. 1391London, Royal Academy, Exhibition of Works by the late George Frederick Watts, R.A., O.M. and the late Frederick Sandys, Winter Exhibition, 1905, no. 215 (lent by the sitter)George Frederic Watts, the son of a pianoforte maker, was born into a life of arts and music. Watts' extraordinary talent was clear from a young age and he was entered into the studio of William Behnes at the age of ten. Behnes was an English Sculptor and under his guidance Watts studied meticulously the forms of marble busts and more specifically the Elgin marbles. At the spritely age of 18 Watts was accepted into the Royal Academy schools. Watts has become known today as one of Britain's most prestigious symbolist and allegorical painters of the Victorian era. The standout piece in the collection is George Frederic Watts' portrait of Samuel Cockerell himself. An unusual portrait which shows Cockerell seated on a dining chair set against a deep red background. He is shown in profile facing away from the viewer. Nonetheless, the rich colour palette and tentative brushstrokes are completely captivating.Samuel's elder brother Frederick Pepys Cockerell (1833-1878) followed in their father's footsteps and became an architect. The brothers collaborated on a number of projects together with Samuel providing designs for fixing and ceiling panels. Frederick was George Frederic Watt's architect who worked on his home, New Little Holland House in Melbury Road. The house was completed in 1876 and Watts remained there until his death in 1904. Watts painted a portrait of Frederick in 1877 and following his sudden death in 1878 Watts gave the portrait to his widow. The present work is thought to have been painted between 1880 and 188, after the death of Samuel's brother Frederick. Samuel Pepys Cockerell (1844-1921) | lots 237-241The following group of works from the collection of Samuel Pepys Cockerell (1844-1921) have passed through descent to the present owner and are coming to market for the first time since leaving the artist's studio. Cockerell was the youngest son of architect, archaeologist and writer Charles Robert Cockerell, RA, RIBA (1788-1863). Samuel Cockerell established a career as a sculptor, painter and like his father, a writer. After studying a B.A. honours degree at Christ Church, Oxford Cockerell entered the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited at the Academy almost annually between 1875 and 1903. Cockerell had a particular interest in sculpture but also depicted a range of broad subjects from literary and biblical references and portraiture. His range of works were exhibited widely not only at the Royal Academy but further afield at the Grosvenor Gallery, the New Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Cockerell was also an avid art collector who was particularly fond of works by the Pre-Raphaelites.One of the most influential figures in Cockerell's life and career was his dear friend Frederic, Lord Leighton. Cockerell and fellow painter Valentine Cameron Prinsep were Leighton's executors and were present alongside family at Leighton's bedside on his death on 25th January 1896. Leighton trusted Cockerell's opinion and according to G. Ulick Browne's article in The Studio Leighton asked 'Cockerell's advice about the design and composition of his picture, and, what is more to the point, almost always took it.' Included in the collection is a series of landscapes by Lord Frederic Leighton depicting views of Lindisfarne Castle. Cockerell's close relationship with Frederic Leighton had a strong influence on both his work and personal life especially from 1875 until Leighton's death in 1896. Works by Cockerell himself show his sensitive nature through two endearing small scale studies of his daughter Frederica Lucy and his interest in sculpture is evident through his detailed portrayal of the statue of Pope Julius III in Perugia.
