ARTIST: DOROTHY WAUGH (1896-1996) SIZE: 27 1/8 x 40 in./69 x 101.5 cm PRINTER: U.S. Government Printing Office DESCRIPTION: “The all-American color scheme of red, white, and blue makes it impossible to ignore the patriotic feel of the message. However, this poster’s ‘stars’ don’t represent the states in the union; rather, in classic bust form, they represent the individuals who helped form the union, including Davy Crockett, Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Captain John Smith. Each figure is associated with a park or monument... It’s a wonderful historic document, but more than anything it’s a spectacular synthesis of styles—the conventional busts set against a gently undulating background that in turn contrasts with the bold Art Deco lettering. It’s Modernism in the service of tradition—and vice versa” (Crouse/Deco, p. 292). (Art Deco; Travel; American)

DESCRIPTION: These four posters by Dorothy Waugh were funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal agency that tried to jump-start the economy during the Great Depression by funding a wide range of economic revitalization projects across the country. “Educated at the Chicago Art Institute, Waugh lived to 100 and had a remarkable career – as a graphic designer, illustrator, children’s book editor at Knopf, teacher at Cooper Union and Parsons School of Design, and published expert on Emily Dickinson. Her juggernaut ‘poster phase’ consisted of at least 16 national and state park posters designed around 1934, ‘National Parks Year'... Amidst the Depression, the National Parks Service posters aimed to remind Americans of the glory of their lands and that the country remained a place of opportunity" (Resnick, pp. 48-49). These four are among the best: utilizing the most modern, au courant examples of typography, color and figuration to create iconic advertisements celebrating American public lands. Rare! Est: $1,000 - $1,500

DOROTHY WAUGH (1896-1996) NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS. Circa 1934. 40x27 inches. U. S. Government Printing Office. Condition B+: minor loss in right margin; tears and creases in margins; pinholes in corners. Paper. Unlike the other posters in Waugh's series for the National Parks, this bold, modernist poster in yellow, red and gray, differs in the manner in which it was printed. The gray areas on the geometrically rendered skier and in the image have been created using a photo-offset process. Her other posters were all created by letter press. The Library of Congress dates this poster from 1930, which seems too early, as her other posters were created during National Parks Year in 1934. Ski pl. 8, Resnick 19.
