Ida Waugh (October 24, 1846 – January 25, 1919) was an American illustrator of children's literature who often collaborated with her lifelong companion, Amy Ella Blanchard.

Ida Waugh was born in Philadelphia on October 24, 1846, the daughter of painter Samuel B. Waugh and his first wife, Sarah Lendenhall, therefore she was half-sister of painter Frederick Judd Waugh. Her step-mother was Mary Eliza Young Waugh, a miniaturist.[1][2]

She attended Académie Julian and Académie Delécluse in Paris.[3] In 1868 she attended the first "Ladies Life Class" at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; in the same class there were Emily Sartain and Catherine Ann Drinker

        YOUNG MOTHER AND INFANT. This wonderful oil on board portrait of a beautiful young mother with an adorable, cheruby infant in her arms. This painting was done by Ida Waugh, who worked with Prang’s Chromolithograph Co. Waugh came from a family of famous painters including her half-brother Frederic Judd Waugh and her father, Samuel Bell. Her stepmother, Mary Eliza Young Waugh was a well-known miniaturist. Ida was an accomplished painter during a time when women in the art world were rare. Ida studied at the Academy Julien and the Academy del le’Cluse in Paris. Ida had a lifelong friend Amy Blanchard, whom she produced children’s books with. Amy Blanchard would write the script, whereas Ida would create all the beautiful pictures of young cheruby babies. She received various awards for her works. Many or most of her children’s books were published by the world-renowned chromolithography studio from Boston, Mass. by the name of L. Prang & Co. One of her paintings depicting six darling cheruby infants was used in a book published by Prang. Signed on the front in the upper right-hand corner, and also boldly signed on the back "Young Mother by Ida Waugh 40100 Pine St, Philadelphia, Penna". Housed in a simple gilt frame with an old, original label at the bottom titled "Ida Waugh". Ida passed in 1919 and spent many summers on Bailey Island in Maine’s Casco Bay. She and her friend Amy were instrumental for organizing the building of a summer chapel for the Episcopalian Church there on Bailey’s Island, which was completed in 1916. SIZE: 9" x 7". Overall including the frame is 9 1/4" w x 11 1/4" h. CONDITION: excellent. (05-107/JJ). $1,000-2,000.

Measures 18"x21 1/2"x1". Weight 2 pds. Born in Philadelphia, Waugh studied at home with her father Samuel B. Waugh (1814-1885) as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy, and at the Academie Julian in Paris. Her work was often on religious-allegorical themes or portraits. Her illustrated children's books were produced with her lifelong companion Amy Blanchard who owned a neighboring summer cottage in Maine. Waugh's half-brother was the well-known marine painter Frederick Judd Waugh. She exhibited at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate.

        IDA WAUGH (PA, C. 1846-1919) "Young Mother", oil on board, signed and titled verso, depicting a young mother with blonde hair in a blue dress with lace trim holding her young child clad in a christening dress, back of the board inscription reads "Young Mother by Ida Waugh 4100 Pine St, Philadelphia, Penna.", housed in a gold gilt molded frame with brass artist name plaque "Ida Waugh", OS: 14 1/4" x 12 1/4", SS: 9" x 7". Original untouched surface with very nice patina, slight craquelure in areas where paint has been laid down more heavily, minor surface soiling; gesso and gilding losses to frame. Ida Waugh was the artist who created the various charming and endearing images of infants for many books and advertisements published by Prang. She was the daughter of famous artist Samuel Bell and half-sister to another famous artist Fredrick Judd Waugh.
