B. Waugh | Dimensions: Image only 27″ x 23″, with frame 32″ x 28” | Very Good Condition. Samuel Waugh (1814 in Mercer, Pennsylvania – 1885) was a 19th-century American painter. Waugh became one of the most famous portrait painters in the northeast. Waugh Painted numerous famous portraits of prominent leaders of government and industry including Abraham Lincoln, Jane Mercer, and the critically acclaimed portrait of Ulysses S. Grant in December 1868, which is now in the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute. Arthur Edwin Bye observed, ”Waugh has interpreted Grant at his best, in warm, rich, well-blended tones, with earnest expression. It is the man, not the hero nor President, who is presented here.” Waugh often painted subjects relating to the aftermath of the Civil War. In this painting, the "Fond Recollection," a lady is looking with affection at a picture being held up by an older man. One can imagine this as a common scene after the war when wives and daughters might spend moments reflecting on loved ones lost in the conflict.
