Henry Waxman Sold at Auction Prices

Henry Waxman was a major portrait photographer in the 1920s-1930s. He started in New York and then went to LA to work for MGM and later, Warner Bros. He advertised himself as 'official photographer of the Ziegfeld Follies,' whom he had shot in 1922. He focused on portfolio shots for aspiring stars, who loved his dramatic flair and retouching.

Rudolph Valentino”. Additionally signed in the border below image by photographer “Henry Waxman”. Exhibiting creasing to top right corner, small .25 in. surface marring to the left of subject’s head, and some spot surface loss to blank borders.       SP Two vintage signed photographs of silent movie divas of the 1920s. The first is a 35.5 x 28cm white bordered, head and shoulders photo of Lillian Gish, taken by M.G.M. photographer Ruth Harriet Louise. Gelatine silver print, inscribed and signed by Lilian Gish with "love and gratitude" in ink on lower left corner. Some creasing and wear to corners. Left hand corners and lower right corner torn, but Gish's signature remains unaffected. Sold together with a 24.7 x 27cm black and white, head and shoulders photo of the French-born actress Renee Adoree, taken by Hollywood celebrities' photographer Henry Waxman. Inscribed to her "dear sweet mother" and signed in ink. Gelatine silver print. Some wear to edges and creasing, particularly at corners. Lower right corner torn without loss. Clipped diagonally at lower left corner. Some stains and fingerprints, but nonetheless a charming picture. Both photographs with pencil annotations in modern hand on rear. Lot also comprises 33 x 26cm unsigned head and shoulders photo of Adoree taken by George P. Hommel. Three items in total.
