      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Andrew John Henry Way (American, 1826–1888) Still Life with Bananas and Cherries in an Overturned Basket on Tabletop Signed 'A. J. H. Way.' bottom right; also with original preparer's label verso, oil on board 12 x 14 in. (30.5 x 35.6cm) Executed circa 1860s. Provenance Godel & Co., Inc., New York, New York. Acquired directly from the above on November 28, 1995 (as Still Life of Cherries). Collection of Dr. Douglas S. Holsclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Frame: 21 1/4 x 23 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. In overall good condition. With slight craquelure in the board, and a glossy finish. Examination under UV light reveals a thick layer of old greenish varnish, which makes it hard to read. Yet, we are able to notice very minor inpainting at bottom center on the ledge, and at upper center in the background. What appears to be minor retouching on the basket at center right, and at upper right - although those could be negatives from the excess of varnish. See specialist's pictures for more details.

Collection of Dr. Douglas S. Holsclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Frame 1: 21 x 19 x 1 1/2 in. The relined canvas in overall good condition. With a series of web-shaped craquelure, especially visible in the darker areas of the canvas. Glossy finish. With a thick layer of old greenish varnish throughout the entire composition as seen under UV light. Clear areas of inpainted along the left, top and right outer edges of the work. Minor repair at upper center left, to the left of the glass. Minuscule pinpoint dots of inpainting (most likely old losses) on the glass itself at center/center right. Similar pattern at bottom center, below the marble ledge. Small repair at bottom center right, on the one to the extreme right. We notice some of the craquelure have been crefully inpainted (see along left outer edge and at upper left corner: most likely from the stretcher bar marks verso). See specialist's pictures for more details. Frame 2: 27 1/2 x 23 3/8 x 2 in. In overall good condition. With a glossy finish. With slight abrasions along the left outer edge of the work. Examination under UV light reveals a thick layer of old greenish varnish. With clear areas of inpainting, all relatively minor and localized. The main one is at center: two inpainted scratches descending vertically from the neck of the bottle to the top of the label, along about 4 in. Small repair to the left at upper left corner in the background. Bottom outer edge slightly (very thinly) inpainted. Pinhead-size dots of inpainting across the table cloth (very few) at center left, center and center right. With a small series of inpainted flakes, all very small, just below the bottle on the wine glass. Minor repair at center right, on the edge of the table cloth and the background, close to the right edge. See specialist's pictures for more details.
