    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

FREDERICK WEEKES, R.A. (British, 1833 - 1920), Keeping a Lookout, watercolour, circa 1880, signed in monogram lower left, 25 x 22.5cm. Frederick Weekes belonged to a deeply artistic family. His father was the sculptor Henry Weekes (1807-1877), one of the most successful sculptors of the mid-Victorian period; his uncle was the artist William Weekes (1856-1909); and two of his four brothers, Henry and Herbert, were genre painters best known for their animal studies. Frederick was brought up in an environment which nurtured his artistic sensibilities. He trained as a painter, but also became a renowned expert on medieval costume and design, and even taught at the Architectural Museum. Weekes' interest in the Middle Ages led to a working relationship with the Victorian architect William Burges (1827-1881), who was a great champion of the Gothic Revival. Burges commissioned him to work on a number of his projects, most notably the re-building of Cardiff Castle for which Weekes painted furniture and friezes. His triptych, 'The Water Carriers' was sold by Christies New York for US$140,500 in October 2008.

PROPERTY REMOVED FROM HEADFORT HOUSE, IRELAND A MARBLE BUST OF A YOUNG MAN measurements note bust: 74cm., 29 1/8 in. column: 122.5cm., 48¼in. mounted on a scagliola column (2) signed and dated: H.Weekes ARA Sc.1856 NOTE At the age of twenty, Henry Weekes became an assistant to Sir Francis Chantrey and assumed responsibility for the latter's studio after 1841. Consequently, Weekes' style is heavily influenced by Chantrey, whose numerous portrait busts, al antica, are archetypal of the early Victorian period. The present handsome bust of a young man epitomises Weekes' style. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1828 to 1877, showing over eighty portrait busts, although the identity of the present bust cannot be confirmed.
