  • Framed & Signed Hans Weingaertner Painting, 1960
    Oct. 31, 2019

Framed & Signed Hans Weingaertner Painting, 1960

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Hans Weingaertner (American, 1896-1970), oil on canvas, 1960, signed and dated in red at lower right. A fascinating painting by Hans Weingaertner presenting a mysterious scene with petite figures descending a staircase, three dogs at the bottom of the stairs, a glimpse of a man sitting on a park bench as a city bus is about to pass on the lower right, and plumes rising from several smokestacks atop the buildings. Notice there are relatively few people featured in the composition, creating an eerie relation to space that is characteristic of Surrealism. In addition, the minimal, sparse forms and closeness to the picture plane were bold artist choices. A fascinating early modern American painting set in a custom frame. Size: 11.875" L x 9.125" W (30.2 cm x 23.2 cm); 16.75" L x 13.625" W (42.5 cm x 34.6 cm) framed. Hans Weingaertner's "Still Life with Chinese Objects" (a signed oil on canvas of a comparable size) sold for $1500 at Christie's New York (13 January 2015, lot 143). Provenance: private Honolulu, Hawaii, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
