      Auction announcements 28th November 2016 Lot 82: The painting comes from a private collection in Schleswig-Holstein not from Malta.br> Oil on panel Pedro Weingärtner (1853-1929) – Brasilian painter Signed, dated and inscribed ‘PWeingärtner – Paris – 1882’ lower left Frame with stamps on the reverse as well as with remains of an owner’s label Dimensions: 32 x 23.8 cm Splendid, neo-classical frame: 58 x 50.5 cm Provenance: Private property Malta Small-scale genre painting featuring an interior setting with a girl standing next to a table having just broken a plate; from the background an elderly man is coming running having his hand raised in a chiding manner; the whole setting is rendered predominately in dark colors, only some effective rays of light shine through the small windows Condition: The painting is in good condition bearing minor signs of age. In places slight abrasion along the edges due to framing. Under UV-light tiny touch-ups in the area of the child’s feet. Pedro Weingärtner (1853-1929) Born in Porto Alegre, the son of a German immigrant family studied among others as pupil of William Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. Residing permanently in Rio de Janeiro, Weingärtner visited Rome in 1886/87, 1889/91 and 1895/98, where he was a member of the Deutscher Künstlerverein. From 1920 onwards, he remained in Porto Alegre until his death. Weingärtner is particularly well-known for his scenes from antiquity.
