Engraving „The Lion Castle of Wilhelmshöhe“, Germany, 1850

      Est: €1 - €100

Steel engraving on paper Germany, around 1850 Drawing by Frederick August Wenderoth (1819-1884) – German painter Dimensions: 22.2 x 31.3 cm Good condition Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 100 EUR Surrounded by bushes and trees the Lion Castle towers in front of a clouded sky. In the lower right corner one can discern a party of well-dressed noblemen. The castle can still be visited today in Wilhelmshöhe by Cassel. It was built between 1793 and 1801 for the landgrave William IX of Hesse-Cassel, later elector William I. The castle’s particular fascination derives from the contrast between the medieval and baroque imagery, which can also be seen in the depiction. The plate was engraved by J. Hoffmeister, the drawing is by Frederick August Wenderoth. The print is in a good condition according to its age. The paper is yellowed and foxed. The sheet measures 22.2 x 31.3 cm, the plate 15,5 x 19,5 cm. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
