(Cincinnati 1931–2004 New York) Study for Mel’s model, 1982-1984, igned, titled, dated and inscribed on the reverse with archive number, oil on canvas, 37.5 x 34.5 cm, framed We thank the Tom Wesselmann Studio for assistance in cataloguing this work Provenance: Sidney Janis Gallery, New York (label on the reverse) Private Collection (acquired from the above in 1987) Sale, Finarte, Milan, 16 November 1993, no. 142 (certificate available) European Private Collection Note: The title 'Mel’s Model' refers to the model used by the artist for his studies, who was introduced to him by Mel Ramos I don’t depict nudes for any sociological, cultural, or emotional intentions. My one intention is to always find new ways to make exciting paintings using the situation of the traditional nude. Tom Wesselmann Tom Wesselmann continues his exploration of the female nude through a pop aesthetic that reinterprets the canons of artistic tradition in his Study for Mel's Model (1982-1984). The work recalls the nudes of Modigliani and Matisse, but the figure is deprived of Modigliani's intimate and melancholic sensuality and Matisse's organic fluidity. The model becomes a graphic sign, reduced to an essential, two-dimensional form, enhanced by flat colour fields. For Wesselmann, the nude body loses all emotional or psychological connotations, becoming an icon of consumer culture and serial visual reproduction. The bright tones and simple composition, devoid of superfluous details, reflect an aesthetic that aims at visual immediacy, where the nude, stripped of all depth, becomes the symbol of a standardised and stylised beauty, consistent with the artist's postmodern vision. For many years, drawing, especially from the nude, was a desperate attempt to capture something significant of the beauty of the women I was confronted with...it was always frustrating because the beauty of the woman was so elusive. Est: $100 - $150

Attributed to Tom Wesselmann, American, 1931 to 2004, mixed media, charcoal and pencil, painting on paper depicting a nude portrait of a woman. Signed lower right. Framed. Stamped, Tom Wesselmann, on the backside. Tom Wesselmann is regarded as one of the founding members of American Pop Art. Alongside his contemporaries Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and James Rosenquist, Wessellmann produced artworks using imagery seen in everyday popular culture. He is famous for his Great American Nude series beginning in the 1960s, which played on the corruption of Eros by a consumer society. This series feature female figures in highly suggestive forms and painted in very patriotic primary colors in red, white, yellow and blue. In the 1970s, Wesselmanns work became increasingly sculptural and started working with constructions and assemblages, but in his final years, Wesselmann returned to the female form in the Sunset Nudes series pictured with very simple lines and forms. American Pop Art Paintings, Wall Art, and Collectibles. One of a kind artwork.

Lot is accompanied by the appraisal issued by Irving Galleries, Inc., dated 11.13.1990. Provenance: Irving Galleries, Palm Beach, Florida | Collection of Mrs. Audrey Larman, West Palm Beach, Florida. Audrey Larman's grandchildren recall her passion for art, suffusing their childhood memories: "My grandma was a lover of art in every form. She adored Picasso, Calder, Dubuffet, and others. She loved taking my brother and I to museums around the world. We would point to a painting on the wall and she would always know the name of the artist. Her homes were the perfect canvas to make her art the star. The paintings are all bold and some dramatic. As children, we would imagine that her paintings would magically come to life. Over the years, she donated significant artwork and fashion - Jean Dubuffet, Bill Blass, and others - to museums, most notably the Indianapolis Museum of Art, so others might enjoy them as well."
