    Rhode Island,1881-1971 Impressionist depiction of a large ships engaged in battle, depicting the Battle of Lake Eerie in which the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the British Royal Navy. West lived in Jamestown, Rhode Island where he opened his studio Red Elephant Studio, focusing mainly on land-and water scenes, tall sailing, and Native American chiefs.

Oil on board, 30 3/16 x 36 1/8 in. (76.7 x 89.1 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Francis West, born Francis X. Polusney, was an active artist in Jamestown, Rhode Island, from the mid-1930s through the early 1960s. West painted seascapes and ship scenes at his Red Elephant Studios, hence the initials "R.E.S." following his signature.
