Painter, b. 1947 - d. 2012

Franz West (16 February 1947 – 25 July 2012) was an Austrian artist.

West was born on 16 February 1947. His father was a coal dealer, his mother a dentist who took her son with her on art-viewing trips to Italy. West did not begin to study art seriously until he was 26, when, between 1977 and 1983, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Bruno Gironcoli.
Work

West began making drawings around 1970 before moving on to painted collages incorporating magazine images that showed the influence of Pop Art. His art practice started as a reaction to the Viennese Actionism movement has been exhibited in museums and galleries for more than three decades.[4] Over the last 20 years he had a regular presence in big expositions like Documenta and the Venice Biennale.

West's artwork is typically made out of plaster, papier-mâché, wire, polyester, aluminium and other, ordinary materials. He started to produce paintings, but then turned to collages, sculptures, portable sculptures called "Adaptives" or "Fitting Pieces", environments and furniture – "welded metal chairs and divans, some minimally padded and upholstered in raw linen." For his early sculptures, West often covered ordinary objects—bottles, machine parts, pieces of furniture and other, unidentifiable things—with gauze and plaster, producing "lumpy, grungy, dirty-white objects".

In the late 1990s, West turned to large-scale lacquered aluminum pieces, the first (and several after) inspired by the forms of Viennese sausages, as well as the shapes of the Adaptives. With their monochrome colors and irregular patchwork surfaces, these works were also meant for sitting and lying.

WEST, FRANZ Vienna 1947 - 2012 Title: Prototyp der Auditorium-Diwane. Date: 1991. Technique: Steel, foam material, cardboard, carpet. Measurement: 110 x 208 x 80cm. We are grateful to the Franz West Privatstiftung, Vienna for the kind support. Provenance: - Kasper König Collection, Berlin (directly from the artist) Between dandy and freak 'He is elusive rather than directorial, informal rather than ritualistic, and involved with the diurnal and secular rather than the atavistic, primal or spiritual. He deflects the larger social concerns in which his art engages by means of disarmingly nonchalant and seemingly casual formulations'. In the mid-1980s, at the age of almost 38, Franz West entered the art scene relatively late. This was followed by his first solo exhibitions, which marked the beginning of the self-taught artist's meteoric rise to fame. His oeuvre mainly comprises sculptures, wall objects and pieces of furniture, but also occasional collages and drawings. His most important work phases include the 'papier-mâchés', abstract plaster sculptures, which West himself compared to human neuroses. An equally important component of his oeuvre are the so-called 'Passstücke', plaster objects that are intended to enter into a haptic interaction with the recipient. West's work can be defined as participatory art, with the pioneers of Viennese Actionism, Minimalism and his exploration of Wittgenstein's philosophical theories and Freud's psychoanalysis serving as sources of inspiration. Raumkunst - Kunstraum This is demonstrated in particular by his spatial installations, in which he focusses on the use of seating furniture. Designed in his own visual language, they encourage the public to interact and add a functional level to the contemplative character of art. As can be seen in his installation 'Schöne Aussicht' (Beautiful View) at Portikus 1988, entire halls are transformed into places of relaxation, encounter and (self-)reflection through an ensemble of seating, tables, wall objects, partition walls, TV screens and artworks by artist friends such as Heimo Zobernig. Auditorium divans The same applies to this divan, which served as the prototype for his 'Auditorium' installation in 1991. He presented the concept for the room, consisting of 72 uniform pieces, for the first time at documenta IX in Kassel. With the interaction of the recipients, West's spatial installations become 'art' spaces that make us aware of the fact that we are always moving in a comprehensive social network, as part of a collaborative and interconnected collective. The divans thus provide space for intimate, personal moments as well as a setting for accompanying performances and discussions, in which Kasper König is also involved. Of course, the reference to Freud's couch cannot be ignored here. Consisting of a construction made of old reinforcing steel, foam and Persian carpets, the divans firstly have a uniform design that emphasises the communal concept and secondly have a strong provisional character. A typical characteristic of West's concept - efficient effect with minimum effort. König and West West's references to Kasper König go back a long way. König showed the 'Passstücke' for the first time in 1981 at his major exhibition 'Westkunst', which had a decisive influence on the way contemporary art was dealt with in West Germany. He also presented Franz West at Portikus in 1988. A few years later, König would also initiate West's professorship at the Städelschule. Shortly afterwards, he took part in the 'Skulptur Projekte Münster' curated by König with a three-part exhibition project and received the Wolfgang Hahn Prize in 1998 for his installation 'Kantine', which was set up in the cafeteria of the Museum Ludwig. Three years later, Franz West is represented alongside greats such as Wolfgang Tillmans and Isa Genzken at the reopening of the Museum Ludwig on the occasion of Kasper König taking office as museum director. In 2009, he exhibited there in his retrospective 'Autotheater' and in 2012 took part in Kasper König's farewell exhibition 'Ein Wunsch bleibt immer übrig' (A wish always remains). One year before his death, Franz West received the Golden Lion for his life's work at the Venice Biennale. Estimated shipping costs for this lot: Arrangement after the auction. Franz West In his artistic works, Franz West explores the various possibilities of sculptural objects and searches for a convincing rationale for their aesthetic design. In doing so, the question of the logic behind the design plays a central role. He uses a very sensuous approach that confers on the objects an almost magical and mysterious allure. This radicalised sensuousness creates a fascinating and confusing world in which the supposedly clear connections are embedded in a complex and simultaneous structure of diverse associations. The viewer is challenged to immerse themselves in this world and explore the complexity of the references. ------------------------------------------------- FRANZ WEST & ALBERT OEHLEN (1947 Wien 2012) (Krefeld 1954–lebt in Bühler und Segovia) Ohne Titel. 1991.

The Maulschelle works are categorized as Passtucke, meaning a sculpture meant to be used by the owner. The concept of the Maulschelle and the artist's intended use for them is described in the monograph Franz West Notes: Writings 1975-2011, 2018, p. 38. The circa date of this work was provided by the artist's studio.

Enjoyment is taken not merely from the observation of my creators, but through the totality of the physical interpretation, of what is represented by these quasinotations, Franz West / Reinhard Priessnitz From: Austria im Rosennetz/Wunderkammer Österreich, MAK, Vienna, /Kunsthaus Zurich, 1996 From the very beginning, West‘s works are very personal and highly original in character, even where, especially in his very first drawings and watercolours, he unmistakably adopts those artistic styles with which he was confronted during his frequent visits to his friend Fred Jellinek, then working at the Galerie Scheer. Amongst these sheets one sees ornamentation and colouring reminiscent of Viennese Jugendstil ot of Hundertwasser, as well as the fantastic-surreal atmosphere and mannered gestures of the Wiener Phanstasten, and faces with the „surrealist beards“ typical of Dali or Leherb. However, essentially such borrowings are neither stylistic takeovers nor altercations with trendsetting ideals; instead they are far more ironic commentaries on the images he encountered, interpreted in a very personal manner. A distanced and ironic reaction to the artistic formulations of others, in particular to those propounded with such vehemence and dogmatism, would remain a key force behind West‘s visual output.

    FRANZ WEST: UNTITLED

    Est: €50,000 - €100,000

Franz West Untitled 1976 mixed media on paper; framed 23 x 34 cm signed and dated on the reverse: West 76 directly from the artist; since then private property, Austria For Franz West, the early 1970s were defined by his struggle for recognition. Artistically, he explored a wide variety of directions, such as Conceptual Art, Marcel Duchamp and Cy Twombly, and Minimal Art. "In the works of the 1970s, you can see how he worked through the ‘isms’ – they have an incredible range" (Klaus Albrecht Schröder (ed.), The Beginning. Kunst in Österreich 1945 bis 1980, ["Art in Austria 1945 to 1980"] exhibition catalogue, Albertina modern, Vienna 2020, p. 578). Collages form an essential part of his early work. Franz West uses found pictorial material, often consisting of advertising brochures, which he defamiliarises by painting additions to them and painting over them, thus giving it new meaning. Echoes of Dadaist collages can be detected, as can Franz West’s admiration for the Pop Art artist Richard Hamilton. "The faces found in the advertising materials are used as ready-mades" (Veit Loers, Franz West, Cologne 2006, p, p. 20), in that they are stripped of their previous function and placed in a completely new context of meaning. Four naked figures, white painted bodies with collaged heads, are standing in front of a red theatre curtain. Thus, we perceive them not as being in front of an abstract background, but in a stage setting. The heads have been painted over in part, giving them a "pitted" look; "half-profiles become foreshortened profiles à la Picasso" (Loers, p. 21 f.), whereby the faces can be seen simultaneously from the front and in profile. Franz West thus intervenes in the collage in a rigid painterly manner. We see two male bodies with ejaculating penises, while the female genitals and nipples are highlighted in colour. A woman’s head on a male body provides additional irritation. Franz West’s assemblages have in fact little to do with conventional collages, as right from the start they are motivated by content rather than form. Here, the eternal smile of the advertising figures appears isolated and is, in its pointless cheerfulness, "frozen into ludicrousness in its self-referentiality" (Loers, p. 21). (Sophie Cieslar)

    FRANZ WEST: UNTITLED

    Est: €200,000 - €350,000

Franz West Untitled 1984 mixed media, collage, tempera on cardboard; framed 36 x 151 cm; 50 x 166 cm (frame) signed and dated on the lower left: F. West 84 inscribed in the lower center: Lisa d Galerie Hummel, Vienna; since then private property, Austria Christine Marcel & Marc Godfrey (ed.), Franz West. exhibition catalogue, Centre Pompidou, Paris/Tate Modern, London, Paris/London 2018/19, ill. p. 65; Franz West. Works 1970-1985, Collection Hummel, Years spent together, Vienna 2018, ill. p. 168. In the 1980s, Franz West was championed by the gallery owner Peter Pakesch and his first international exhibitions received considerable attention. The final breakthrough was imminent. Parallel to the Passstücke ("Adaptives") that he had been developing since the mid-1970s, he was still creating collages. The surface in this striking horizontal format is given rhythmic structure by means of cardboard pieces glued on top of one another. The application of pink paint in the lower half creates a kind of horizon line on which an ostrich – a colourful transfer – strolls in the centre of the picture. To the right, the pink moves upwards, forming a kind of interior space in which a woman stands in a dancing pose with an "Adaptive" wrapped around her neck like a feather boa. Pink is a colour that the artist also likes to use in his later sculptures. He is probably inspired here by the shade of pink used in tooth models and denture impressions in dentistry: Franz West's mother was a dentist. The result is "a combination of monochrome and reduction with small pictures that serve to satisfy the need for embellishment, thereby appealing to longings and visions of happiness" (Klaus Albrecht Schröder (ed.), The Beginning. Kunst in Österreich 1945 bis 1980, exhibition catalogue, Albertina modern, Vienna 2020, p. 581). The postcard-like landscape motif on the left side of the picture also plays a role here. It opens up a further associative space. Cut-out figures and cute transfers are placed in absurd settings like actors in stage-like spaces. Painted and collaged parts, figuration and abstraction collide in a "theatre of the absurd " (Veit Loers, Franz West, Cologne 2006, p. 22). (Sophie Cieslar)
