      Max Westfeld (German, 1882-1971) - Girl, Oil on Canvas, Dusseldorf, 1935. Signed and dated. 91x67cm. Minor flaw. Max Israel Westfeld was a German-American portrait, genre, still life and landscape painter of the Dusseldorf School. Westfeld attended the Friedrichs-Gymnasium Herford. He received artistic training as a painter at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. There he was a student of Eduard von Gebhardt. Settled in Dusseldorf , where he was a member of the artists association Malkasten and the Association of Dusseldorf Artists. As early as 1912, the Dusseldorf Theater Week counted him among the most renowned portrait painters in Dusseldorf, alongside Fritz Reusing, Wilhelm Schneider-Didam and Richard Vogts. Due to his Jewish ancestry, he was persecuted during the Nazi era. He was banned from painting in 1936. During the November pogrom of 1938, which he did not personally experience because he was in prison following a denunciation, his Dusseldorf apartment was raided. Many of his paintings and furnishings there were destroyed. While his small studio remained unmolested, paintings that he had exhibited in the Dusseldorf Cafe Markus were also destroyed or badly damaged. He and his family managed to leave the German Reich in 1939 and emigrate to the United States. In 1940 he settled in Nashville, Tennessee. There he established himself as a sought-after portrait painter. His most famous portraits include a portrait of the Berlin rabbi Leo Baeck, which he painted in Germany in 1926 on behalf of the Dusseldorf Bnei Brith lodge, and a portrait of Albert Einstein, which was painted in the United States in 1944.
