        Netherlands, Holland 1610-1675 Depicts Diana, the Roman goddess of hunting and chastity, bathing in a forest surrounded by nymphs and dogs being gazed upon by the hunter Actaeon in mid transformation into a deer as punishment for viewing the nude goddess. De Wet's works are predominantly biblical and mythology based with his later works placing greater emphasis on landscape backgrounds. His pupils include Paulus Potter and his son Jacob De Wet the younger.

        Behind a stone window niche with a round arch and keystone is the half-portrait of an elegant gentleman with dark blonde hair, a white shirt with a yellow waistcoat, and a turquoise-blue velvet jacket over it. His left arm is laid on the parapet holding a black hat with a red ribbon. With his left hand he has just opened the tin lid of a brown jug. With a bright, friendly face, slightly open mouth and shining eyes, he looks sideways out of the picture.

Dargestellt ist die Szene nach der Rechtsprechung König Salomos (1 Kön 3,16-28), nach welcher der einen Dirne, rechts neben dem Pferd, das Kind zugesprochen wird, während die andere Dirne verschattet rechts des Architekturvorsprunges sitzt.
