Circle of JACOB WILLEMSZ DE WET (Haarlem, ca. 1610-Cologne ?, 1677/1691). "Sacrifice at Lystra. Paul and Barnabas are honoured by the pagans as gods". Oil on oak panel. Open board with faults. The frame has xylophagous damage. Measurements: 61 x 85 cm; 90 x 114 cm (frame). This work on oak panel is related to the circle of Jacob Willemsz not only because it is a biblical painting with a multitude of characters, but also because of the careful morphology and the careful study of each of the characters, an aspect typical of Willemsz's painting. The painting depicts the episode in which Paul and Barnabas healed a lame man who was able to walk after being looked at by Paul. Then the crowd, seeing what Paul had done, raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language: Gods like men have come down to us. And they called Barnabas Jupiter, and Paul Mercury, because he was the speaker. Jacob Willemsz was a Dutch Baroque painter who specialised in biblical and history painting, sometimes in the form of landscapes with figures. Little is known of his biography although it is known that he may have had contact with Rembrandt in Leiden due to the style of his early chiaroscuro paintings. He had a large number of pupils - up to thirty-four are mentioned - of whom the best known are Jan Vermeer van Haarlem, Job Adriaensz. Berckheyde and Paulus Potter, who may have entered to study with Wet in May 1642.

Oil on cradled panel Netherlands, after 1650 Jacob Willemsz de Wet (c.1610-c.1675) – Haarlem landscape and genre painter This work is accompanied by a certificate by Prof. Dr. Werner Sumowski, dated 6 June 1999 Dimensions: 77 x 110 cm Framed: 113 x 137.5 cm Good condition Classical subject of the Haarlem master with a scene from the Old Testament; paintings by Jacob Willemsz de Wet fetch up currently to around €13,000 in the auction market Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 5,000 Euro Condition: The work is in good restored condition. The painting shows spotty retouches and a restored fissure in the upper left image half. Partially framing marks can be found in the area of the edges. The rear frame is slightly bumped in places. The dimensions are 77 x 110 cm. The frame measures 113 x 137.5 cm. Jacob Willemsz de Wet (c. 1610-c.1675) Little is known about the early life of the Haarlem painter. Houbraken mentions him rater secondarily as an art dealer in the biographical sketches of Philip Wouwerman. De Wet, since 1632 member of Haarlem Guild of St. Luke, left a notebook that mentions 34 pupils, such as the landscape and animal painter Paulus Potter. Measured by the number of his students, it seems that de Wet led a large and successful workshop in Haarlem. His son, Jacob II was the only one of de Wet’s children, which also was trained to a painter. The works of De Wet was stylistically influenced by Rembrandt van Rijn. JACOB WILLEMSZ. DE WET (HAARLEM C. 1610-C. 1691) St Paul and St Barnabas at Lystra,

        Est: £4,000 - £6,000

JACOB WILLEMSZ. DE WET (HAARLEM C. 1610-C. 1691) St Paul and St Barnabas at Lystra, Oil on panel, 45 by 59 cm. Provenance: Olmade Collection (Bryan Collection), Paris, 1888, B-350. Exhibited: The New York Historical Society, New York, 1915, no. B-350 (as Leonard Bramer). Literature: H. Weichmann, Leonard Bramer: sein Leben und seine Kunst , Leipzig 1923, p. 208 (as incorrectly attributed to Bramer). Jacob Willemsz. de Wet painted several versions of St Paul and St Barnabas at Lystra . Many artists of the same period, who were heavily influenced by Rembrandt, painted this subject matter with a comparable technique. Due to these similarities the present lot was exhibited as by Leonard Bramer (1596-1674) in the New York Historical Society in 1915. The illustrated scene is a passage from the Bible concerning the preaching of St Paul and St Barnabas at Lystra, today in Southern Turkey. Among the crowd there was a lame man who was ordered by St Paul to stand up on his feet and walk, and so he did. The pagans of Lystra, having witnessed the miraculous cure, hailed St Paul and St Barnabas as Jupiter and Mercury. They brought an ox as a sacrifice, which is seen on the left side of the composition. The two apostles, who are standing behind the young girl holding a candle in the centre of the composition, are trying to persuade the crowd to stop the sacrifice.

JACOB WILLEMSZ. DE WET HAARLEM CIRCA 1610 - 1675

        Est: $7,000 - $9,000

PROPERTY OF AN AMERICAN PRIVATE COLLECTOR CHRIST AMONG THE DOCTORS measurements 22 3/4 by 18 3/4 in. alternate measurements 57.8 by 47.6 cm. oil on panel Condition Note: Panel is uncradled and slightly bowed from right to left. There are four screws screwed into the reverse of the panel in order to attach it to the frame. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish. The paint surface however is well retained with good detail in the figures. There are some thinnesses here and there in the darks and some scuffing along the frame line with small spots of paint loss. There are a few discolored retouches in the darker areas that are visible to the naked eye. Ultra violet light reveals a thick and uneven varnish. There are lines of retouching along all four edges. There are some scattered small strengthenings here and there. There may be other older restorations underneath varnish but it is difficult to judge. We are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described in our catalogue. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSION CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE. PROVENANCE Ch. Potter, Paris; Acquired by the parents of the present owner in Paris, circa 1925. NOTE We are grateful to Prof. Werner Sumowski who, based on photographs, has confirmed the present painting to be a work by de Wet. He compares it to another painting by de Wet depicting The Presentation in the Temple in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires (see W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, Landau/Pfalz 1983, vol. VI, cat. no. 2492, reproduced).
