CAROLUS LUDOVICUS WEYTS (Belgium/Netherlands, 1828-1875); "Ship Charles Cooper of New York, Capt. R. Coffin. Passing Flushing. 1858". Oil on canvas, unsigned, artist identified on Childs Gallery of Boston label verso. In vintage lemon gold molded frame. OS: 24 1/2" x 31 1/4", SS: 21 1/4" x 28". Relined, fine overall craquelure. Flushing refers to Vlissingen, Netherlands, seen on right. The artist, who resided there, was the son of reverse glass master Petrus Weyts. The ship, built in Black Rock, Connecticut in 1856, is flying the flags of the US, France, Finland and the Star of David. The ship was condemned in the Falklands, remained in use as a warehouse into the 1960s, portions have been salvaged for a local museum. She was the last surviving 'packet' ship in the world.
