      Edna Reed Whaley (1884-1979) "Magnolias" Watercolor. Signed lower right. Professionally framed and matted. In frame 24"x30"x1". Weight 8 pds. Born in New Orleans in 1884, Edna Whaley studied art at Sophie Newcomb College and graduated in 1903. She married Marcellus Seabrook Whaley and moved to Columbia, SC In addition to her own artistic pursuits, which included landscapes, still lifes, and portraits executed in oil, watercolor, and pen and inks, she held classes in her studio and served as the art critic for a city newspaper, The Record. Whaley also worked as a restorer oil paintings held in important South Carolina collections and participated in regional exhibitions, including the Southern States Art League.A fervent arts advocate, Edna Reed Whaley was a driving force in the cultural community of Columbia, South Carolina in the early part of the twentieth century. Along with her husband, Marcellus Seabrook Whaley, a respected local judge, she was a founding member of the Columbia Art Association in 1916. In 1925, the two collaborated on a book which examined the Gullah culture of the Carolina Lowcountry and featured Edna's illustrations. Later, she was one of four founders of the Columbia Art Museum.
