        Skip Whitcomb (B. 1946) Fishing from a Boat W/C

        Est: $250 - $450

Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Fishing from a Boat" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 19c Fishing Boat stamp issued August 8, 1991. "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish." With this sentence, Ernest Hemingway began his immortal classic The Old Man and the Sea (1952). Hemingway masterfully silenced critics with its publication, later winning the Pulitzer Prize for the work, a simple tale of an old man, a fish, the sea and a boat. For as long as man has turned to the sea for food, boats have played an important role. Fishing boats such as those belonging to the old man in Hemingway's yarn have transported man onto lake, river and ocean for centuries. As early as 6000 B.C., the Egyptians built boats from tightly-woven bundles of reeds, craft which took them out onto the waters of the Nile and into the Mediterranean in a never-ending quest for fish. The first boats employing planking along the sides supported by ribs were developed in 2000 B.C. in Crete. Slowly, the fishing boat took on different designs around the world, each design adapted to the waters and available construction materials in specific areas. Today, some of the old designs are still in use and fishing boats still play a very crucial role in modern economies. Contemporary fishermen may rely upon dozens of inventions from electronic sonar equipment to locate fish, to sensitive instruments which gauge water quality, but even the best fishermen of today can go many days without taking a fish just as Hemingway's Old Man. Skip Whitcomb (B. 1946) "Butterflies" Watercolor

        Est: $250 - $500

Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Butterflies" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Collectors Panel for Mint Stamps of the World Swaziland Butterflies issued January 4, 1992. Thoreau said that the study of butterflies extends the limits of being in new directions, so that "I walk in nature with a sense of greater space and freedom. It suggests, besides, that the universe is not rough-hewn, but perfect in its details." A butterfly is among the most beautiful of creatures. There's so little structure or power to produce such a flash of light and color. Their color is partly dyes and partly diffraction of light and is similar to the colors seen on a wet oily street or in a rainbow. The colors, some brilliant and some subdued, protect the butterflies by letting them blend with their background, by advertising that they taste bad, by suddenly dazzling their pursuer, or by making them resemble a larger animal the pursuer fears. Butterflies have been seen at amazing heights by airplane pilots and far out to sea where they have landed on ships to rest during migrations. Most species eat plants, some eat insects, and some cross-pollinate the many flowers they visit. Some newly-hatched bachelor butterflies swarm around a mud puddle for days before beginning their search for a mate. There are species which like to fight, attacking birds, dogs, and people, often driving them away. Butterflies and the rest of nature were classified by Carl von Linne -- Linnaeus in Latin. His name is part of the scientific name of many butterflies, indicating that he named them first, for example, the pipevine swallowtail is Papilio philenor Linnaeus. Image Size: 20.25 x 16.25 in. Est: $350 - $700

Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Summer Garden Flowers - Rose" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 29c Rose stamp issued April 28, 1994. "When the sea created the beautiful, dew-sparkling Venus . . . the earth, in its part, gave birth to this lovely plant, a new masterpiece of nature . . . majestic on her thorny column, this immortal flower." One of the earliest known descriptions of the Rose was given in this ode written by the Greek poet Anacreon during the 5th century B.C. And fossilized specimens formed millions of years ago further attest to this flower's lengthy existence. It has been theorized that the Rose originated in central Asia and eventually spread eastward to North America and west to Asia Minor and Europe. In fact, a number of species that were grown centuries ago continue to appear in modern gardens. In America, as well as in many other countries worldwide, Rose exhibitions and competitions give amateur rosarians ample opportunities to learn more about their favorite flower and perfect their growing skills. One estimate revealed that more than 50 million Americans enjoy cultivating Roses and that these gardeners purchase 100 million Rose plants annually. In addition to their beauty, these popular blooms are also used to decorate windbreaks. Climbing varieties are known to quickly cover walls and thrive in conditions where more delicate plants cannot. Regardless of its use, the time-honored Rose continues to be the centerpiece in gardens all over the world. Image Size: 15.25 x 13 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14713)

        Apr. 18, 2021

        Skip Whitcomb (B. 1946) "Lily"

        Est: $350 - $700

Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Summer Garden Flowers - Lily" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 29c Lily stamp issued April 28, 1994. Included in the Liliaceae family are about 250 genera and more than 3,700 species. In addition to a bevy of beautiful flowers, this group also contains onions, asparagus and yams. However, the true, garden-variety Lilies are from the genus Lilium. This category is typified by bulbous plants with leafy stems and large blooms, such as the Tiger Lily. A lovely species characterized by fiery-gold petals flecked with deep purple, this plant has been grown for centuries in China, Korea and Japan for its edible roots. In America, Tiger Lilies fill gardens throughout the summer months. Another cultivated species is the popular Easter Lily. A native of Japan, this variety bears fragrant, trumpet-shaped blooms of pure white. Lilium speciosum, also indigenous to Japan, is distinguished by white blossoms speckled with crimson. This stunning species emits a heavy perfume as well. Since the 1830s, when English nurseryman Henry Groom began hybridizing Lilies, gardeners have had a wealth of varieties from which to choose. Today, by producing these flowers under carefully-controlled conditions, hybridizers can now offer the public a wide array of high-quality, virus-free bulbs. Image Size: 15.25 x 13 in. Skip Whitcomb (B. 1946) "Gladiola"

        Est: $350 - $700

Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Summer Garden Flowers - Gladiola" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 29c Gladiola stamp issued April 28, 1994. The name of this gorgeous flower actually refers to its foliage. Gladiola comes from the Latin gladius, meaning sword. Yet, its sword-like leaves merely complement the breathtaking blooms that appear on this popular plant. In Africa, where most Gladioli originated, the bulbs of some species are an important source of food and beverage. Throughout the tropical rain forests surrounding Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls, for example, it is possible to find Gladiolus primulinus in perpetual bloom. This same species was introduced to England around the turn of the century. At that time, authorities from London's famed Kew Gardens referred to this flower as a "unique and brilliant discovery" stating that it "ought to be the starting point for a new race of garden gladiolus." Eventually Gladiolus primulinus did become the parent of a multitude of graceful Gladiola hybrids. But Gladioli aren't limited to the tropics. There's even a European native, the magenta-colored Gladiolus segetum, a plant that thrives amidst grain, flourishing in fields throughout the Continent. In America, Gladioli are cultivated in both amateur and professional gardens. There, these statuesque plants tower above most other flowers, reaching heights of up to four feet. Growing in a wide range of colors from pastels to vibrant hues, the Gladiola is also a favorite among floral designers who use these magnificent flowering spikes in large, showy arrangements. This dazzling hybrid lily is prized for its large, brilliant orange-red flowers. A single stalk can have five or more blossoms, which generally open at varying times. Skip Whitcomb (B. 1946) Columbia River Gorge

        Est: $350 - $700

Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Columbia River Gorge" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue 19c Columbia River Gorge Postal Card issued May 9, 1992. Born in the Canadian Rockies, it courses through Washington state and coils around to form the Washington-Oregon boundary before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. There are many adjectives to describe the Columbia River, but "placid" and "meandering" are not applicable. The Columbia is the largest North American river -- in volume -- which discharges into the Pacific, with a drainage basin of more than 250,000 square miles and a total length exceeding 1,200 miles. It feeds tributaries such as the Kootenay, Snake and Willamette Rivers and serves as one of the world's most prolific producers of hydroelectric power. It also slices through some of the most majestically beautiful countryside in North America. One such locale is the Columbia River Gorge. Lewis and Clark trekked through this 60-mile canyon on the last leg of their trailblazing exploration of the Pacific Northwest. What grandeur they encountered: sheer basalt cliffs shooting 4,000 feet above the shorelines; lacy waterfalls cascading down steep rock faces; churning rapids whipping the river into a turbulent frenzy; the foothills of imposing peaks standing sentry on both the north and south banks. Today visitors to the Gorge gaze upon these breathtaking vistas and display wonder, amazement and awe -- emotions which surely must have overcome both Lewis and Clarke and the pioneers who followed in their wakes. Est: $250 - $500

Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Summer Garden Flowers - Marigold" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 29c Marigold stamp issued April 28, 1994. Although the name Marigold as used in America refers to members of the Tagetes genus, which includes African and French Marigolds, the pot Marigold of the Calendula genus is the flower from which the name was derived. Originally dubbed Mary's Gold by ancient herbalists, this species and other unrelated plants also share the Marigold moniker. Interestingly, the varieties called French and African, which are among the most common garden flowers in North America, are misnamed. Both are in fact native to Mexico. Despite this confusion, the popularity of these fiery blooms of yellow, orange and red continues to thrive. Making distinctive additions to summer flower beds and window boxes, these handsome annuals flourish in porous soil in a sunny location. Marigolds varieties grow in varying heights from six inches to almost three feet, allowing for an assortment of uses. The flower heads also differ in size and petal type. Some resemble small carnations while others look like daisies. Many varieties also possess strongly-scented foliage that acts as a natural insect repellent. Image Size: 15.25 x 13 in. Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Fishing Boat Tied Up" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 19c Fishing Boat Coil issued June 25, 1994. "I never lost a little fish - yes, I am free to say it always was the biggest fish I caught that got away." Poet Eugene Field's words still ring true today, a century after they were originally penned, for modern fishermen continue to boast about immense catches that consistently seem to wriggle off the hook. Typically, prize catches are found in deeper waters, far from shore. To pursue such creatures, fishing from boats is essential. Throughout the world, such vessels are vital to those who depend upon the fruits of the sea for their survival and livelihood. In Canada and throughout Polynesia, for example, canoes are among the most popular watercraft used for fishing. Relatively unchanged from those once fashioned by early inhabitants, these time-honored boats continue to carry modern fishermen to areas beyond the casting range of shore anglers. Another craft commonly used for plying offshore waters is a rowboat. These small vessels are easily maneuvered in places such as sandbanks and shallow stretches of sunken mud, where fish gather to feed on worms, dead crabs and even smaller fish. Image Size: 15.75 x 13.5 in. Overall Size: 18 x 16 in. Unframed. (B12955)
