Artist Charles White grew up on the south side of Chicago, where he was subjected to violence, poverty, and a toxic home environment. Despite his difficulties, he continued to go to school, and in the seventh grade, he won a scholarship for classes at the Art Institute. Charles Wilbert White's paintings showcase his dedication to African American causes, using black-and-white or sepia tones to bring their culture and history to the public eye.

Artist Charles White was among those invited to participate at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s first exhibition of all African American art in the 1970s.
