The growing popularity of photography in the 1940s dovetailed with White's interest in social realism and recording everyday images. White was also friends with photographers Gordon Parks, a fellow founding member of the South Community Art Center in Chicago; and Roy DeCarava in New York in the 1940s. The traveling exhibition Charles White: A Retrospective was one of the first exhibitions to include original photographs by White. It included 18 photographs from the 1950s including many portraits of fellow artists, candid family and street scenes and documentary images that inspired his work. The printed catalogue also features an essay on White's work in photography by art historian Deborah Willis.

With the artist's estate signature ink stamp, lower right. Provenance: the estate of the artist; Heritage Gallery, Los Angeles; private collection, New York; thence by descent to a private collection, California. This extremely scarce print is not only a fascinating portrait of one of Charles White's heroes but is likely the earliest known lithograph by the artist. This proof is also likely unique as we were not able to locate any other recorded examples of this lithograph. The artwork was first catalogued by Heritage Galleries as a drawing, and subsequently sold as a drawing at Swann Galleries on April 22, 2021. When this artwork was conserved, it was discovered that it was a lithograph, and not a drawing. A very similar drawing of this image of Diego Rivera is catalogued as D10 in Lucinda Gedeon's catalogue raisonné, and was was sold at Swann Galleries on April 2, 2015. This remarkable proof was made at the beginning of Charles White's study at the Art Institute of Chicago. White was determined to become an artist despite his family's tight finances, and early rejections from discriminatory art schools. White won a $240 scholarship to attend the Chicago Art Institute, entering in 1937. White completed the two year course in one year despite often walking 60 blocks home to save money, and while working as both a cook and valet. In his essay, Graphic Interpeter of the Black People, in the catalogue of Charles White; A Retrospective, Mark Pascale describes how Charles White had experience in lithography in the late 1930s while a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Pascale notes how one of White's sketchbooks from the period includes numerous notes on lithography techniques and a reference to Francis Chapin, the principal instructor of lithography at SAIC. Upon his graduation in 1938, White soon qualified to join the easel and mural divisions of the Federal Art Project in Illinois. The previously earliest recorded lithograph was Laborer, circa 1939-40, whose location is not known today, and, as Pascale illustrates, also has a related drawing found in one of the artist's sketchbooks. Diego Rivera's international fame and the rise of the Mexican muralists made a profound impact on Charles White and many other social realists' art work. In the mural division of the FAP, White worked with muralists Mitchell Siporin and Edward Millman, who both had assisted Rivera on murals in Mexico. Later in 1947, upon winning a Rosenwald scholarship to travel and study in Mexico, White met Diego Rivera and studied with David Alfaro Siqueiros at the Esmeralda Escuela del Arte and worked at the Taller de Gráfica Popular in Mexico City. This lithograph is a superb impression of Charles White's powerful and extremely scarce print. Triumph displays White's mid-career mastery of drawing and its translation on to the litho stone. The image and the title Triumph possibly defines the moment of this couple finally obtaining freedom. The direct, frontal pose and the shawl-head covering of the woman is very similar to White's drawing of Harriet Tubman in his General Moses and Sojourner, 1954. Here the silvery gray lithographic crayon imitates his drawings in Wolff crayon, while beautiful patterns of scratched lines create highlights and textures. We have not found an image of another impression aside from the one illustrated in Images of Dignity: The Drawings of Charles White. The print was one of four prints, with 8 drawings, included in the artist's important 1958 spring solo exhibition at the ACA Gallery Charles White which traveled to Harris Hall at USC in Los Angeles. Correspondence from ACA Gallery director Herman Baron to White in the Charles White papers of the American Archives of Art states the first impression was sold to his friend and patron Harry Belafonte before the exhibition and other impressions were requested. Another impression was also included in the group exhibition 31 American Contemporary Artists at ACA Gallery in September of 1959. Gedeon Ea12; Oehler/Adler pp. 221-222.

The artist and printmaker Bob Blackburn printed Charles White's later 1940s lithographs John Brown, Gedeon and Frederick Douglass. Waiting is a very good impression of this very scarce print - it is best known as Awaiting His Return. According to Lucinda Gedeon, it was the first of four lithographs White printed in Mexico in 1946. White apparently was uncertain of its date and title when he inscribed this impression - under the title Hope for the Future, he wrote Waiting. Hope for the Future is the title he used for his previous 1945 lithograph which depicts a mother and a child. We have not found another impression of this print with either title. Another impression in the collection of the National Gallery is alternatively titled Mother. The image is a scarce depiction of a wartime African American subject. White depicts an African American woman seated under a banner of the Gold Star, a celebration of a husband or son actively serving in the armed forces. Other impressions of this important lithograph are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, the David C. Driskell Collection, University of Maryland, the Howard University Gallery of Art, the Artist Students League, New York and the Primas Family Collection. Gedeon Ea4.

Charles White's Patriarch, Portrait of John Brown is significant not only for its artistic merit, but for its historical and cultural importance. The work depicts abolitionist John Brown, who played a crucial role in the anti-slavery movement in the United States during the mid-19th century. Brown led an armed insurrection in 1859, attempting to seize the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, with the goal of sparking a slave revolt. The raid failed, and Brown was captured and later executed, becoming a martyr for the abolitionist cause. Several important artists have painted John Brown, including Jacob Lawrence, Thomas Hovenden, and John Steuart Curry. Lawrence's "The Legend of John Brown" depicts the life and legacy of the abolitionist in a series of dynamic and colorful images. Hovenden's The Last Moments of John Brown shows Brown on the day of his execution, surrounded by prison guards and facing imminent death. Curry portrays Brown as a heroic figure, leading a group of men into battle against slavery. These artists, like White, were drawn to the story of John Brown as a struggle for freedom and justice. Each artist brought their unique perspective to the subject, highlighting different aspects of Brown's life and legacy. White's portrayal, painted exactly 100 years after John Brown's martyrdom, captures the spirit and determination of Brown, who is depicted with a strong and defiant gaze, long hair and beard flowing around him as if he is an apostle. White worked primarily in black and white or sepia and white, palettes the artist found best suited to his incredibly skilled draftsmanship and artistic sensitivity, and this work is no exception—the result is a striking portrayal of John Brown in monochromatic tones, with Brown's dark skin and angular features heightened by the expressive circular strokes surrounding the subject's head, creating a halo effect in the background. The rarity and importance of Patriarch, Portrait of John Brown lies not only in its subject matter and artistic excellence, but also in White's personal connection to the civil rights movement. White was a prominent African American artist who dedicated his work to promoting social justice and equality for Black Americans. His portrayal of John Brown serves as a testament to his own political beliefs and his commitment to representing the struggles of his community. Patriarch, Portrait of John Brown was given by the artist to Clarence Benjamin Jones—lawyer, personal counsel, advisor, draft speech writer and close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. It then went to The Heritage Gallery in Los Angeles, the first gallery to represent Charles White. The work was subsequently owned by Dr. Edward J. Littlejohn, a trailblazing lawyer and legal educator. In addition to its compelling provenance, the rarity of this work is worth mentioning: John Brown is one of only two white men that Charles White discusses ever painting, the other being Abraham Lincoln. CHARLES WHITE (1918 - 1979) Folk Singer. Linoleum cut on artificial Japan paper, 1957. 907x455 mm; 35 3/4x18 inches, full margins. Edition of 30. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "Ed/30" in pencil, lower margin. In this wonderfully expressive linoleum cut, Charles White reinterprets his iconic 1957 ink drawing Folk Singer (Voice of Jericho: Portait of Harry Belafonte). Harry Belafonte was a important figure to Charles White - a friend, patron, collaborator and inspiration. In the late 1950s, White made musicians, singers and actors the subjects of his work--from the famous to the anonymous. While they had met in the early 1950s through their membership in the Committee for the Negro Arts, White and Belafonte became close friends and collaborated often once White moved to California. Andrea Barnwell describes how "with a generous gift from their dear friend Harry Belafonte," Frances and White rented a house from friends on Summit Avenue in Pasadena in 1956, before they moved to nearby Altadena. Belafonte also wrote the introduction to White's 1958 ACA Gallery exhibition catalogue when he first exhibited Folk Singer, and the foreword to the 1967 book Images of Dignity: The Drawings of Charles White. In the latter, Belafonte describes the profound connection he made to the work of Charles White: "You are enriched by the experience of having known Charles White's people, who are like characters from a great novel that remain with you long after the pages of the book have been closed." Through White's hand, we become familiar with this great singer. This is a very scarce print and only the second to appear at auction. While the intended edition was inscribed as 30, Lucinda Gedeon noted an edition of 25. We know the location of only a few other impressions of Folk Singer. An impression, titled Voice of Jericho and dated 1958, in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art was exhibited in the recent travelling exhibition Charles White: A Retrospective.
