WHITE (1871–1925) | Ring Toss, Ohio 1899 Image Size: 17,7 x 13,8 cm English: Half-tone print (monochrome orange), printed in 1903 for "Camera Work 3", mounted on Japanese paper as well as on the original page of the same size c. 30 x 21 cm, in excellent condition. White was one of the most important protagonists of American Pictorialism, a founding member of the Photo-Secession and a friend of Alfred Stieglitz. His early work was created in Newark in Ohio, where he worked as a bookkeeper in a grocery shop. Here he devoted himself to the everyday culture of small-town life, as in the present picture, which shows three girls playing a game of ring toss. It is one of his most successful motifs and copies in various techniques can be found in renowned collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York or the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. PROVENIENZ Andrew Smith Gallery, Santa Fe. LITERATUR Alfred Stieglitz, Camera Work, The Complete Illustrations 1903–1917, Köln 1997, S. 128. * Vollbesteuert

      • Untitled (Child with Fishbowl), 1910
        Feb. 22, 2024

        Untitled (Child with Fishbowl), 1910

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Heading: Author: White, Clarence H. Title: Untitled (Child with Fishbowl) Place Published: Publisher: Date Published: 1910; vintage print Description: Vintage toned platinum print. 12x16.5 cm (6½x4¾"), tipped to board 40.7x51 cm (20x16").A lovely platinum print by Clarence H. White. This domestic vignette, reminiscent of the Victorian celebration of childhood, takes place within a modernist grid of shadow and form. A charming composition artfully rendered in the soft focus style so characteristic of pictorialism. Clarence H. White (1871-1925) played leading roles in pictorial photography both during and after the heyday of the Photo-Secession. Stieglitz made his work highly visible in Secession exhibitions and publications. White also became widely known as a photographic instructor, teaching at both the school he established and elsewhere...The subject matter and the subtle tones of his platinum prints reflected the photographer's gentle, mid-western nature. White's photographic output was tempered by his teaching responsibilities, but his later pictures, made after World War I, show an awakening to cubist ideas." After the Photo-Secession by Christian A. Peterson, pp. 208-09.
