        MILES WHITE. "Jamaica." Costume drawing for the 1957 Lena Horne Broadway musical. 267x343 mm; 10 1/2x13 1/2 inches. Mixed media on paper. Signed lower left. Framed. White was a top Broadway and Hollywood costume designer. The artist created the costumes for the original Broadway production of 'Oklahoma,' 'Carousel,' and 'Bye Bye Birdie.' In film, he worked on Around the World in 80 Days and The Greatest Show on Earth. For live shows, White designed outfits for Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and the Ice Capades.

        Miles White (American, 1914-2000) Costume Design for Child- Fall River Legend Signed "Miles White" l.l., titled l.r., with a label from Giraffics Gallery, East Hampton, New York, on the frame backing. Ink and watercolor on paper, sight size 11 3/8 x 7 3/4 in. (29.0 x 19.7 cm), framed. Condition: Subtle rippling, not examined out of frame. N.B. As the name suggests, Fall River Legend was based on the life of Lizzie Borden. Choreographed by Agnes de Mille, the ballet premiered at The American Ballet Theatre on April 22, 1948, featuring an original score by Morton Gould, lighting design by Jean Rosenthal, and scenic design by Oliver Smith.

        WHITE MILES: (1914-2000) American Costume Designer. A good original pen, ink and watercolour costume design, drawn and signed by White, one page, folio, n.p., n.d. (c.1952). White has executed five separate designs, including two clowns, for use in the Cecil B. deMille film The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). Four small swatches of orange, yellow and white fabrics are stapled to the upper and lower left corners. Signed by White at the base. VG
