WHITE, Ruth Taylor (1899--?). A Cartograph of Southern California. 1929. Color lithograph die-cut pictorial map on folded printed card. The map commemorates Southern California’s third air mail anniversary, and is replete with aviation-themed figures, “showing how the Land of Sunshine has become so air-minded that everybody flies and yon and yon and hither.” 9 ½ x 10 ½”. WITH: the original air-mail cover.

A wonderful pictorial map of the California wine country from San Diego in the South to Eureka in the North. Known for her whimsical maps in the 1930s, much in the style of Jo Mora and John Held, Jr., which were published in Our USA - A Gay Geography, Ruth Taylor created these "cartographs" for every state in the union. Here, for the Wine Advisory Board in San Francisco she provides historical, touristic and wine-related vignettes from all over the state. Picturing America pl. 122.

TAYLOR WHITE, Ruth (1899-?). Wine Map of California. San Francisco: Schwabacher-Frey Co., ca. 1945. Color offset lithograph pictorial map poster. 42 x 32 ¼”. Linen backed. Minor repaired tears and creases in image and margins. A-. This colorful pictorial map, published by the Wine Advisory Board of San Francisco, highlights the winelands of California, which regions are shaded in green and illustrated with vignettes of wine-growers and other California characters from Eureka to Imperial Valley. A decorative inset wine cask lists the wine-making towns from each major area of the state. Taylor was one of the most talented and prolific graphic map artists of her time. Her work appeared in poster and book form, and included maps for the Hawaii Tourist Bureau, the Golden Gate International Exposition, and an atlas of the United States, “Our USA—A Gay Geography,” accompanied by text by her brother.

Known for her whimsical maps in the 1930s, much in the style of Jo Mora and John Held, Jr., which were published in Our USA - A Gay Geography, Ruth Taylor created "cartographs" for every state in the union. She also designed a poster of California for United Air Lines, as well as this map for the 1939 exposition in San Francisco. During World War II, White volunteered with the Red Cross in India, where she created a map of the View of American Red Cross China, India, and Burma (https://www.lapl.org/).

Ruth Taylor White's charming pictorial maps are among the most popular collectible maps of the early 20th century. These whimsical maps, often known as cartographs, combine graphic style, color and comical observation and are drawn in the same style of Jo Mora's celebrated work of the same period. In this map, the entire chain of Hawaiian Islands is depicted and decorated with cartoonish characters, with major roads and points of interest noted. Decorated by a large ribbon-style banner cartouche, quoting Mark Twain, that states "The loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean."
