Whitefield; the literary department under the superintendence of John Keese, Esq]. New York, 1846. First Edition. Comparable: Swann, 1984 - $4,800. 4to., (12" x 9"). (Title page not present). 28 chromolithographed plates (occasional offsetting). Contemporary half calf, red cloth boards, the smooth spine in five compartments with gilt lettering in one (spine cracked, extremities scuffed with loss). After emigrating to the U.S. from England in 1838, Whitefield took up sketching landscapes with an eye toward publishing. In the 1840s he toured along the Hudson River and New York City, painting views of famous estates as well as local flora, and teaching drawing classes to pay the bills. In the 1850s he traveled to Minnesota, where he produced a number of watercolor landscapes of the area, later returning to England and Scotland to promote settlement in the new state. The views found in this book are predominantly from the Northeast, depicting both natural scenes and stately buildings.
