THOMAS WHITLEY OIL OF HOBOKEN PROMENADE

      Est: $20,000 - $30,000

WHITLEY, Thomas W. (fl. 1835 - 1865). Hoboken, the Promenade. Oil on canvas. Signed l.l. “T Whitley”. 13 3/4" x 23 1/4" canvas, 20 1/4" x 29 3/4" framed. PAIR OF WONDERFUL CITYSCAPES OF NEW YORK PAINTED DURING THE CITY’S AMAZING GROWTH This evocative 19th-century landscape of the promenade in Hoboken was painted by Thomas W. Whitley, who emigrated from his native England to the United States in the early 1830s, initially to Paterson, New Jersey, and then to New York City. He rapidly attracted attention for his nuanced and lovely work, exhibiting at the National Academy from 1835 to 1863, and at the Apollo Association and the Art Union in 1841 and 1848-9. He won greatest recognition for his atmospheric landscapes, which captured brilliantly the fleeting effects of light and nature. This sparkling picture shows the waterfront in Hoboken as it appeared in the 1830s, as couples and families stroll by the tranquil water’s edge, admiring the expansive horizon, dotted with sailing vessels. The filtered light suggests early evening, and this work is a foremost example of Whitley’s talent at capturing atmospheric effects and of his fine painting style."
