Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Paris Bedroom. this lot is the Time Capsule Paris city house sculpture studio early 20th century bedroom contents of artist, socialite and philanthropist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney that was recreated in her Old Westbury, Long Island Studio later in the 20th century when the furnishings were returned from France, now comprising 13 items plus accessories offered as a single ensemble lot as follows: 1) Armoire, 92 x 52 x 17.5 inches, carved, oak or similar density wood, with screen doors, elaborate interior locking arm with absent lock, with two keys, three shelves and a portion of the absent front right foot present. Condition: Lock and lower right foot section absent, fabric behind screen old and torn, some cracked and absent front panel edge moldings, wood with an old handsome dark patina with some minor estate storage scattered surface wear. 2) Covered Baloon Porter Throne Chair, 55.5 inches high x 28.625 inches wide x 33 inches deep, 23.5 inches interior depth to front of cushion, walnut or related hardwood. Condition: Wood frame generally quite sound with visible scattered surface wear, upholstery worn, damaged and stained. 3) Chandelier, gilt and painted figural light fixture, wood with metal supports, 33 inches high x 45.5 inches diameter. Condition: Cracking and flaking throughout, partially rewired requiring rewiring and inspection by a licensed electrician before use, damages, old weathered patina. 4) GM Miller 1967 watercolor of Paris house bedroom interior including some of the objects offered in this lot but not others, 13.25 x 19.875 sight, 21.75 x 28.125 x 1.5 inches overall framed, gilt frame. Condition: Gererally very sound overall with some scattered light foxing, frame edge wear. 5) Writing Desk, cabriole leg, chinoiserie, 35 x 28.75 x 17.875 inches, no visible markings, stationery according to the family is War era but unmarked, associated accessories are later 20th century Asian made with differing markings and according to the family have been displayed in situ at the Old Westbury Studio for several decades and thus are included in the lot although not from the earlier Paris era. Condition: Period patina has mellowed and darkened however is mostly intact with areas of alligatoring, lid chip, interior inset writing surface and border damages. 6) French Fauteuil, the armchair features patinated carved wood, 39.625 x 26.75 x 27 inches, interior seat depth 21.75 inches, no visible markings. Condition: All over even surface wear, upholdtery stains. 7) Canopy Bed, carved painted wood, fitted with large wheels, aprx 114 x 51 x 82.625 inches, mattress aprx 74.75 x 49.5 x 10 inches incl. top pad excluding 4 inch deep x 72.5 long x 47 inch wide inset box spring. Condition: Generally sound and intact overall with even wear and patination, textiles a bit dusty and with generally even age discoloration. 8) Chaise Lounge Chair, carved walnut or related hardwood, cabriole legs, 34.625 x 30 x 78.626 inches, aprx. cushion height 18.5 inches, interior seat depth 70 inches, with a tassel throw and two cushions. Condition: One rear leg broken through and reglued, overall surface wear, upholstery with overall even wear, throw generally good. 9) Antique Dressing Table with Fitted and Mirrored Fold Out Vanity Interior, figural mahogany or related hardwood, cabriole legs terminating in gilt metal sabots, together with a pair of Paris style 20th century porcelain lamps with as is shades and a pair of signed Sevres porcelain small lidded jars broken and as is, 27.5 x 30.875 x 19 inches overall closed, no visible markings.
