    GUNNAR WIDHOLM (1882-1953) NORDISKA SPELEN / STOCKHOLM. 1917. 39x28½ inches, 99x72½ cm. Semmy Nyströms, [Stockholm]. Condition B / B-: extensive replaced losses, repaired tears, creases and overpainting in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; some discoloration in margins and along folds. The Nordic Games were winter sports competitions that were to be held in the different parts of the region starting in 1901. Eventually the competitions were only held in Sweden, and can be said to be the forerunner of the Olympic Winter Games. Gunnar Widholm was a sports cartoonist during the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, leading him to become an international newspaper cartoonist. This same skiing image of a man descending the slopes was made into a bronze medal for the Nordic Games.

    Original vintage winter sports poster featuring an image of ice skating competitors for the Northern Winter Games - Nordiska Spelen - Stockholm 4-12 February 1922 / Northern Games, International Competitions. Artwork by the Swedish artist Gunnar Widholm (1882-1953). A predecessor to the Winter Olympic Games, the Nordic Games were organised by the Swedish officer, General Viktor Gustaf Balck (1844-1928; "the father of Swedish sport"), in 1901 and were held again in 1903 and 1905, then every four years until 1926. Country: Sweden. Year: 1922. Artist: Gunmar Widhom. Size (cm): 112.5x70.5. Fair condition, tears and creases on margins, trimmed on margins.
