      Est: €1,500 - €2,250

Johan Wierix (um 1549 Bréda - um 1615 Brüssel) after Albrecht Dürer: Coat of Arms with a Skull, 16th century, Copper Engraving Technique: Copper Engraving on paper Size: 9 x 6 2/3 in Condition: With circulating margins about 5mm wide. Foxing and stained. Horizontal centre crease visible on verso. Description: Decades after Dürer's death, Johan Wierix copied Dürer's 1503 copperplate engraving "The Coat of Arms with the Skull". He clearly followed the original and shows a tartan shield with a skull, on the upper corner of which sits a helmet with a closed flight as a crest. Extending arcanthus tendrils serve as the helmet cover. The eerie coat of arms is accompanied by a mismatched pair. A lady with lowered eyes, who can be identified as a Nuremberg lady by her dancing dress and bridal crown of the patrician wedding costume, is being caressed from behind by a wild man, who meanwhile neglects his function as a coat of arms holder (cf. Schoch I.105.37). Mauquoy-Hendrickx records three states of the sheet formerly attributed to Hieronymus Wierix: with Dürer's monogram and the year "1503", with the address Claes Jansz. Visscher's address and with the publisher's address erased (cf. Mauquoy-Hendrickx II.269.1485). Cat.Rais.: Mauquoy-Hendrickx II.269.1485 Keywords: Renaissance, Figure, Mythology, Religious, Germany, Netherlands, Print, Germany, Netherlands, Antwerp, Death, Coat Of Arms, Woman, Devil, Wild Man, Helmet, Wings
