      Moses Wight (American/Massachusetts, 1827-1895) oil on canvas portrait of a young woman, standing on a veranda between flowering trellises and attired in an off the shoulder, full length blue dress with lace collar and red paisley shawl, holding a leafy branch in her hands. Signed and dated 1858 mid-right margin (on veranda). Charles E. Cobb/Boston, Massachusetts framer label en verso. Housed in an a early 20th century molded gilt wood and composition frame. Sight - 43 1/4" H x 35 1/4" W. Framed - 50 1/4" H x 42 1/4" W. Biography: Moses Wight kept studios in Boston for most of his career and exhibited at the New England Art Union and the Boston Athaneum. He also studied in Paris with Antoine Hebert and Leon Bonnat and in Berlin, where he earned some key European commissions. In the U.S., he painted Ralph Waldo Emerson and Josiah Quincy III. His studio, along with several canvases, was burned in the great Boston fire of 1872. He moved to Paris in 1890. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)

      Signed ÒM.WightÓ in lower right corner of the painting. Painting depicts a lady in beautifully decorated room. As you can see, painting is very detailed and has strong colors. This painting is a great example of American art. It is in a good condition. Size of the painting is: 21 by 25 _ inches (53.3 by 64.8 centimeters) Size of the frame is: 28 by 32 3/4 inches (71 by 83.3 centimeters) WIGHT, Moses, artist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, 2 April, 1827. He was engaged in portrait-painting until 1851, when he went to Europe. After three years of study under Antoine A. E. Hebert and Leon Bonnat in Paris, he returned to the United States, but went abroad again in 1860, and a third time in 1865. His portraits include those of Alexander yon Humboldt, Louis Agassiz, Charles Sumner, Edward Everett, and Josiah Quincy. Among his ideal works are "Sleeping Beauty," "Eve at the Fountain," "Lisette," " Confidants," "John Alden and Priscilla," and "Pet's First Cake."       Moses Wight (Boston, 1827-1895) Portrait of George Washington. Signed "M.Wight Pinx" l.r. Oil on canvas, 47 1/2 x 38 1/2 in., in original gilt-gesso frame. A typed Museum of Fine Arts paper label is affixed to the back of the stretcher and the frame. Condition: Good condition with stable craquelure, two small patched repairs l.r. Note: Moses Wight was born in Boston on April 2, 1827. He began painting portraits in Boston around 1845, and later studied in Paris with Antoine A.E. Hebert and Leon Bonnat. He returned to Boston in 1854 and worked in his studio until 1873. His works have been represented in the American Antiquarian Society, the Boston Public Library, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Peabody Institute, The Worcester Art Museum, and the Baltimore Museum. Notable figures painted by Wight include Alexander von Humboldt, zoologist and oceanographer Louis Agassiz, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Sumner, political figure Emory Washburn, U.S. educator, and political figures Josiah Quincey III and Edward Everett.
