GEORGE WIGHTMAN American (1825-1915) Trolley Scene oil on board, signed lower left "Wightman" 15 x 10 13/16 inches Provenance: Private Collection, New York. Other Notes: George D. Wightman was born in 1825 in London, England to Mary Anne Poole and George Wightman, a merchant. At the age of 17, Wightman traveled to the United States. By 1850, he had settled in Buffalo, New York where he remained for the rest of his life. In 1852, he married Elizabeth Bain of Scotland and together they had twelve children. Little is known of his Wightman's artistic training but by 1851 he had established a business as an engraver and copperplate printer. Advertisements for his business appeared regularly in local Buffalo newspapers for the next twenty years. In 1857, Wightman was awarded a silver medal at the State Fair for his engravings. In 1859, Robert Price sold the rights of his patented process of photographing directly onto a wooden block to Wightman. Price encouraged people to call on Wightman for engravings "as he is a gentleman that will attend strictly to business and is in every way worth of the attention of the public, I have no hesitation in recommending him to those having work executed in this line."1 Wightman's work can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. George D. Wightman died in Buffalo, New York on April 5, 1915. He was 90 year old. 1 "Legal Record", Buffalo Morning Express and Illustrated Buffalo Express (Buffalo, New York), Mon, Jul 18, 1859, Page 3
