ATTRIBUTED TO JAN WIJNANTS (DUTCH 1632-1684) FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE oil on canvas 53 x 65cm; 21 x 25 1/2in 73 x 85.5cm; 28 3/4 x 33 3/4in (framed) Property from the Estate of Peter Gerrard Provenance Spink & Son, London Peter and Prudence Gerrard (acquired from the above circa 1962) Wijnants regularly drew inspiration for his work from the woods, open landscape and waterways surrounding his native Harlem, his early development greatly influenced by both Jacob Van Ruisdael and Philip Wouwermans. The artist often repeated the compositional structure of his landscapes, with a path punctuated by figures skirting the canal and receding into the distance. Here, as in many of his paintings, the left side of the picture is built up with trees while the right side opens up to a panoramic view, creating a sense of space. The staffage in Wijnants' paintings was often added by other artists such as Adriaen van de Velde (1636-1672) and Johannes Lingelbach (1622-1674), who was a frequent collaborator.

JAN WIJNANTS (Haarlem, 1632-Amsterdam, 1684). "Landscape with figures". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower margin. Measurements: 24.5 x 30.5 cm; 39 x 45.5 cm (frame). Painter of the Dutch golden century specialized in the painting of landscapes, Jan Wijnants offers us on this occasion a serene and open scene, with a fluffy autumn foliage that absorbs the lights in a homogeneous and sieved way. The low point of view favors a chromatic treatment by sections that lead us naturally into the meadow surrounded by peasants. He uses different light planes to generate the sensation of depth. In his painting, influenced by the painter Jacob van Ruisdael, Wijnants is poetic in his feeling and skillful in his technique. Jan Wijnants was a Baroque painter from the Netherlands who specialized in landscapes. Born into a Catholic family in Haarlem, he was the eldest son of an art merchant also named Jan Wijnants. By his father's second marriage, he was the half-brother of Egbert van Heemskerck (1634-1704), a painter of genre scenes. In 1653 he was in Rotterdam, in the house of a relative, although it is probable that he returned later to Haarlem and that he remained there until April 1660, when it is documented the rent in his name of a house in Amsterdam. A few months later, in December of that year, he married Catharina van der Veer, and it is probable that he did not leave this city until his death. It is unknown who his master was, but the style of his painting shows the influence of the landscapes of Jacob van Ruisdael and how he focused on painting winter forests and Italianate landscapes, with special attention to the study of trees. His pupils were Adriaen van de Velde, when he was still living in Haarlem, and Nicolaes de Vree, already in Amsterdam.

Eines der Vergleichsbilder mit gleichem Motiv aber in Nuancen von dem vorliegenden Gemälde abweichend, besonders was die Datierung angeht, mit folgender Provenienz: Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Köln, 1876 - 1942; Verkauf an Heinz Kisters, Kreuzlingen; Christie‘s, London, 28. April 2006, Lot 41. Der vermutlich in Haarlem geborene Künstler siedelte 1660 nach Amsterdam über. Seine frühen Werke der 1650er-Jahre wurden von dem Maler Dirck Wyntrack (1625-1678) beeinflusst. Zu dieser Zeit finden sich häufig Bauernhäuser als Motiv in seinen Bildern. In seinen späteren Werken bilden Dünenlandschaften den Schwerpunkt seiner Landschaftsgemälde. Dr. Klaus Eisele, who saw the work in original in 2023 and whom we thank for valuable advice, doubts the authorship of Wijnants and assigns the (still appealing) landscape rather in the circle of Jan Vermeer van Haarlem. The famous Haarlem landscapists Salomon van Ruisdael, Jacob Isaaksz van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen may also have strongly influenced Jan Vermeer, who was a generation younger.

Verneer Van Haarlem, el Viejo. En ellas el artista se especializó en el detalle de sombreados follajes y en la armonía de sus colores verde-oscuros. Los bellos tonos grises que Wijnants pintó el fondo con nubes de este paisaje, le prestan una singular sensación de atmósfera. Sus primeras obras representaban granjas construidas con ladrillos vistos y casitas de campo, en las que se aprecia la mano del pintor Dirck Wijntrack, quien solía colaborar con él. Hacia 1660, Wijnants se trasladó permanentemente a Amsterdam. Las pinturas de esta etapa están inspiradas en los alrededores de su Haarlem natal, siguiendo la tradición de los paisajes que habían realizado Pieter de Molijn y Jacob van Ruisdael. Las pinturas de Wijnants son esencialmente variaciones sobre el mismo tema: el paisaje de dunas, en el que crea cada vez un foco de interés diferente. Para ello utilizó frecuentemente el motivo de un árbol seco o deteriorado en primer plano, y pobló sus composiciones de pastores, cazadores y viajeros descansando, para cuya representación contaba con la colaboración de otros pintores, como Johannes Lingelbach o Adriaen van de Velde, quien según el tratadista holandés Houbraken fue su alumno. Se desconoce quién fue su maestro, pero el estilo de su pintura trasluce la influencia de los paisajes de Jacob van Ruisdael y como él se centró en la pintura de bosques invernales y paisajes italianizantes, con especial atención al estudio del arbolado. Tuvo como discípulos a Adriaen van de Velde, cuando residía todavía en Haarlem, y a Nicolaes de Vree, en Ámsterdam. La obra de Wijnants fue de gran relevancia para el paisaje inglés del siglo XVIII, en especial para la pintura de Thomas Gainsborough. Bibliografía. Unter einem hohen blauen Himmel auf einem sich ins Tal schlängelnden Weg, der von einem Hügel durch Gatter begrenzt wird, mehrere Figuren einer illustren Jagdgesellschaft. Im Vordergrund ein Mann mit Jagdhorn sowie ein Weiterer mit Hunden und einem Falken auf der Hand, auf die übrigen Teilnehmer wartend. Zu diesen, auf den Weg befindlichen, gehören ein eleganter Herr mit Falken zu Pferde, ein ihm vorangehender Mann, der auf zwei gehaltenen Stangen mehrere Jagdvögel trägt. Hacia 1660, Wijnants se trasladó permanentemente a Amsterdam. Las pinturas de esta etapa están inspiradas en los alrededores de su Haarlem natal, siguiendo la tradición de los paisajes que habían realizado Pieter de Molijn y Jacob van Ruisdael. Las pinturas de Wijnants son esencialmente variaciones sobre el mismo tema: el paisaje de dunas, en el que crea cada vez un foco de interés diferente. Para ello utilizó frecuentemente el motivo de un árbol seco o deteriorado en primer plano, y pobló sus composiciones de pastores, cazadores y viajeros descansando, para cuya representación contaba con la colaboración de otros pintores, como Johannes Lingelbach o Adriaen van de Velde, quien según el tratadista holandés Houbraken fue su alumno. Se desconoce quién fue su maestro, pero el estilo de su pintura trasluce la influencia de los paisajes de Jacob van Ruisdael y como él se centró en la pintura de bosques invernales y paisajes italianizantes, con especial atención al estudio del arbolado. Tuvo como discípulos a Adriaen van de Velde, cuando residía todavía en Haarlem, y a Nicolaes de Vree, en Ámsterdam. La obra de Wijnants fue de gran relevancia para el paisaje inglés del siglo XVIII, en especial para la pintura de Thomas Gainsborough. Bibliografía.
