Measurements: 70 x 85 cm; 84 x 99 cm (frame). White swans and other birds splashing in the water or taking flight animate a nature of exuberant vegetation. Wooded landscapes dominated by autumnal colours are transformed in the distance into bluish mists that envelop the panorama in radiant light. During the Dutch Golden Age a type of landscape and pastoral genre painting developed in which figures such as Dirk Wyntrack and Nicholaas Berchem, trained in The Hague and Haarlem, were prominent. Lake landscapes, grazing cattle and sheep, ponds and the occasional architectural element peeping out from the brushwood were common elements. The naturalistic approach to the reproduction of animal species extended to the atmospheric capture, prefiguring what would become an autonomous genre, the landscape, in the 19th century. The present painting is an outstanding example of this tradition of Dutch naturalism, dominated by winter and pastoral scenes with no human presence. Dirck Wyntrack, 1625 Heusden – 1678 Den Haag

INTERIEUR MIT FÄSSERN, KÖRBEN UND ZWIEBELN Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 41 x 49 cm. Mittig unten auf Schemel signiert und datiert „1638“. In einem scheunenartigen Innenraum, der nach rechts im Hintergrund leicht abgedunkelt ist, werden stilllebenhaft im Vordergrund mehrere Objekte präsentiert: in der Mitte ein großes stehendes Fass, darauf liegend ein großer glänzender Henkelkrug, ein kleinerer und zwei Zwiebeln. Davor am Boden liegend eine glänzende Kupferkanne, mehrere Keramiken, ein Holzbottich, Muscheln, einige abgetretene Hausschuhe und ein alter hölzerner Schemel, auf dem eine Platte mit einem Fleischstück neben einem gefüllten Glas stehen. Im Hintergrund links hängt an einem Balken ein weiterer Tonkrug und daneben an der Wand ein Papierbild, das einen Greifvogel zeigt. Malerei, bei der die stilllebenhaften präsentierten Objekte durch die helle Lichtführung besonders hervorgehoben werden. (1351553) (18)

Dirck Wijntrack (before 1625 -1678)

The interior of a barn, with a wheelbarrow, barrels, jugs and other kitchen utensils, vegetables, poultry, ducks and a cat, a peasant entering through a doorway in the background oil on panel 54.9 x 80.4 cm. NOTES Little is known about the artist, who was active in Rotterdam and The Hague. The detailed rendition of the poultry and kitchen utensils, combined with the diagonally composed stable interior and the background figure, is characteristic of the artist's work. The present lot can be compared with the painting, signed and dated 1650, in the Historisch Museum, The Hague (see E. Buijsen, et al.5i, Haagse Schilders in de Gouden Eeuw, 1998, p. 269, fig. 1). We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
