Bror Anders Wikstrom (Swedish/Louisiana, 1854-1909), "L'isle Derniere", 1890, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, canvas stamp en verso, 10 in. x 16 in., framed with title plaque. Note: Bror Anders Wikstrom began his working career as a sea captain, later forsaking maritime life for the arts. He arrived in New Orleans from Sweden around 1883 and is perhaps best remembered as a designer for elaborate Mardi Gras productions through the 1890s. Wikstrom also was highly popular during his lifetime for his Louisiana landscapes, portraits and historical subjects. His lifelong love of marine life and the sea are evident in the work offered here, as he provides a fleeting and captivating glimpse into the storied Isle Dernière in 1890. In the 1840’s Isle Dernière (L’isle Derniere) or “Last Island” on the Gulf of Mexico approximately five miles south of the mainland was a popular summer resort for residents of southern Louisiana and in particular the New Orleans area. Train and steamboat connections from the French Quarter made the island with its continuous breeze an ideal destination to escape the oppressive summer heat. Isle Dernière featured a carousel, approximately 100 vacation homes and John Muggah’s Ocean House Hotel which housed a restaurant, ballroom and offered bowling and billiards. On August 10, 1856, an unnamed hurricane, often referred to as the “Last Island Hurricane,” struck the island with a force equal to that of a Category 4 storm today devastating the island, its inhabitants and visitors. It is believed approximately 200 of the 400 people on the island perished and every building on the island was destroyed in the storm. The hurricane split Isle Dernière into two areas and much of the land eroded, leading to the island’s name to be pluralized as Isles Dernières or “Last Islands.” Subsequent hurricanes and storms have contributed to the continual erosion so that all that remains now is the “Isles Dernières Chain,” five small islands, three of which comprise the Terrebonne Barrier Islands Refuge, home to nesting waterbirds. Bror Anders Wikstrom (Swedish/Louisiana, 1854-1909) , "Bank of St. John's River, Hibernia, FL", 1886, oil on canvas board, inscribed and dated "Hibernia Fla. 1886" lower right, signed and inscribed in Swedish en verso, 16 in. x 14 in., framed. Note: Hibernia, Florida was founded in 1790 by George Fleming when he built Hibernia Plantation on the St. Johns River, just south of Jacksonville. When he died in 1821, he left the plantation to his son, Colonel Lewis Michael Fleming, and the community continued to thrive. The original plantation home, which had been expanded by Colonel Fleming, survived the Civil War and became a hotel on the banks of the St. Johns River with all of its beautiful natural surroundings. The St. Johns is the longest river in Florida and one of the few rivers in the United States that flows north. The work offered here depicting the St. Johns riverbank displays Bror Anders Wikstrom's full scale of talents as a landscape painter. A sailor before he became an artist, Wikstrom enjoyed depicting water and included it in many of his landscapes. The edge of the river on the right side of the canvas in this scene reflects the sky and brings a sense of openness to a composition that is otherwise dominated by the trees on the left. The autumnal colors of the foliage resonate against the luminous background, drawing attention to the play of light and shadow throughout the painting, all delicately in balance by Wikstrom's deft hand.

Bror Anders Wikstrom (Swedish/Louisiana, 1854-1909), "Fishing Boats", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 12 in. x 17 in., framed . Provenance: Henry Plauché Dart (1853-1934), thence by descent; Estate of Jane and Stewart Maunsell. Note: Born in Sweden, Bror Anders Wikstrom’s first career was that of a sailor, making numerous trips between the Netherlands and the United States. The scenery from these voyages stayed with him when Wikstrom decided to become an artist. Wikstrom worked in many different media throughout his career; he was an illustrator, printmaker, painter, and cartoonist, as well as spending time designing Carnival pageant sets in New Orleans. Wikstrom taught art; he, along with Andres Molinary, Paul Poincy, and Achille Perrelli, founded the Artists’ Association of New Orleans, where young artists in the city could have lessons in drawing, oil painting, watercolor, and sculpting. Many of Wikstrom’s oil paintings harken back to his past at sea; he often portrayed ships sailing or in the harbor, using his keen sense of color and atmospheric effects to highlight the maritime vessels. In the current lot, Wikstrom demonstrates his technical skills with a brush, depicting a hazy background and fine details for the rocks and boats with a neutral and mauve palette that suggests an early morning on the water.

Bror Anders Wikstrom (American/Louisiana, 1854-1909), "Sailing at Dusk", 1909, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 12 in. x 17 in., original gilt frame Note: Bror Anders Wikstrom spent his youth in the merchant marine before studying art in his native Stockholm. Coming to New Orleans in the early 1880s, he was very active in the local art scene. He was one of the organizers of the Artists Association of New Orleans and the most prolific Carnival designer of the 1880s and 1890s. Wikstrom painted Louisiana and Florida landscapes and portraits, but is best known for his marine paintings, many of which depict sailing scenes on Lake Ponchartrain and along the Gulf Coast of Florida. In addition to the time spent at sea as a boy, he also frequently traveled to Europe and the Caribbean, providing additional inspiration for his work. The painting offered depicts a consistent theme in Wikstrom's oeuvre: a schooner at full sail on the open water, with a dramatic gray sky over mauve purple seas.
