BIOGRAPHY: Georg Christoph August Wilckens was a German painter and restorer. The son of a farm owner, he first attended the Moravian Brethren in Christiansfeld and then the Latin school in Hadersleben. After an extensive period of traveling as a painter's apprentice, the painter Charlotte von Krogh, who lived in Hadersleben, encouraged him to pursue an artistic education. From 1888 to 1891 Wilckens attended the arts and crafts schools in Munich and Nuremberg. From 1891 to 1894 he worked as a draftsman at the Lithographic Institute in Dresden. From 1894 to 1897 he studied at the Dresden Academy of Art. Wilckens was a student of Leon Pohle and a master student of Gotthardt Kuehl. In 1899 he went on a study trip to France and Northern Italy, then settled in Dresden and in 1902 became a founding member of the artist group " Die Elbier " with his friend Georg Erler. In January 1899, Wilckens made a spectacular debut at the Kunsthalle in Kiel with a large collection of his works. The exhibition primarily consisted of pictures of the folk life on the North Sea island of Fan, which he had discovered as a place to study on the recommendation of his colleague Hans Peter Feddersen. He subsequently spent the summer months here and bought a small house in 1906. The theme of "Fan" was almost exclusively the subject of Wilckens' art, and in his pictures he captured the folk life there during the heyday of local painting between 1895 and 1914. In his views he is close to the Hessian Carl Banzer, who worked for Kuhl at the same time and portrayed Hessian folk life with a simple sense of reality. In 1907, Wilckens received a visit on Fan from the aspiring painter Fritz Fuglsang, to whom he recommended that he also begin his artistic training at the Art Academy in Dresden. In 1909, Wilckens married Julie Schoop from Hamburg and moved with her to Gerokstrasse 9 in Dresden. He sold his summer house to the painter Jacob Nobbe and bought a larger one with a studio. Occasionally he painted on Fan with the Swedish painter Carl Johan Forsberg, who had settled on the island with his wife in 1914. After the referendum in 1920, North Schleswig, including the island of Fan, fell to Denmark, making Wilckens automatically a Danish citizen. However, he continued to spend the winter months in Dresden and the summer months on Fan.Between 1900 and 1906, Wilckens created patterns for the weaving school in Scherrebek, founded by Pastor Johannes Jacobsen. He also designed the large curtain in the entrance hall of the Nibelungenhalle in Konigswinter. He earned a large part of his living as a church restorer and church painter. In North Schleswig he restored and painted the frescoes in the churches of Mogeltondern, Apenrade, Hviding, Toftlund, Holebull and especially Starup (designs for Museumsberg Flensburg). In 1897, while working in the church in Mogeltondern, he painted a portrait of the feudal count Hans Schack and his wife Henny. In 1929/30, a wall frieze was created in the Nikolaikirche in Flensburg for the memorial room for those who died in World War I.In the autumn of 1913, the Flensburg Museum of Decorative Arts honoured him with a large solo exhibition. Wilckens then went on a study trip to Taormina in the winter of 1913/14. He exhibited in Dresden, Berlin, Munich, Flensburg, Baden-Baden, Dusseldorf, Breslau, Konigsberg, Darmstadt, Hamburg, Fan and Charlottenborg/Copenhagen, among others. In the course of his artistic life he received a wealth of awards and honours. Paintings by Wilckens are in numerous collections of art museums in Denmark and Germany. The majority of his artistic legacy was lost in Dresden during the bombing war.
