        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Part of the Wisconsin Surrealist movement in the 1930s and 40s, John Wilde was a Surrealist painter with focus on life and death through grotesque, doll-like people in "otherworldly situations". Many of his paintings have old bones, mutated female creatures, and dream-like landscapes, and frequently he painted himself into his work. He also did detailed, colorful and eerily glowing still lifes. His association with Surrealism began when he was a student at the University of Wisconsin and became a friend of Marshall Glasier, that Wisconsin Surrealist leader and his art teacher. He joined Glasier at salons at his home where artists gathered to discuss European modernism and other avant-garde topics. Wilde's painting was also linked to Magic Realism and its New York exponents Paul Cadmus and George Tooker.

JOHN WILDE Self-Portrait on Sultan's Bed.

        Est: $6,000 - $9,000

JOHN WILDE Self-Portrait on Sultan's Bed. Pencil with white heightening on cream wove paper, 1947. 235x275 mm; 8 3/4x10 3/4 inches. Signed, dated and inscribed in pencil. Provenance: Private collection, New York. Wilde (1919-2006) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and studied at the University of Wisconsin where he was influenced by American Surrealist artists such as Marshall Glasier (1902-1988) and Karl Priebe (1914-1976) as well as the Magic Realists including Jared French (1905-1988). He served in World War II, where he designed camouflage patterns, but during this time fell into a depression and used art as a creative outlet. After the war, he finished his masters of art degree at the University of Wisconsin, focusing on Max Ernst (1891-1976) and writing in defense of nonsense, wit and the irrational in art. His own artistic output furthered his interest in the surreal—many of his works play fancifully with scale, creating fantastical, humorous compositions.

      • JOHN WILDE Shirley in the Kitchen, Scene #6.
        Sep. 17, 2020

JOHN WILDE Shirley in the Kitchen, Scene #6.

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

JOHN WILDE Shirley in the Kitchen, Scene #6. Oil on board, 1974. 155x213 mm; 6 1/4x8 1/2 inches. Initialed and dated in oil, upper recto, and counter signed, titled and dated in pencil, verso. Ex-collection private collection, Madison, Wisconsin. His own artistic output furthered his interest in the surreal—many of his works play fancifully with scale, creating fantastical, humourous compositions. Following the death of his first wife, Helen, in 1966, Wilde married Shirley Grilley, who is depicted in this lot and in many of his later surrealist nude works.

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

John Wilde (American, 1919-2006) Work Reconsidered: Love After Murder, Series III, 1989 oil on wood signed in ink verso 13 1/8" x 20 1/4" Provenance: Perimeter Gallery, Inc., Chicago, Illinois (label verso) Schmidt-Bingham Gallery, New York, New York (label verso) Exhibitions: Wildeworld: The Art of John Wilde, Elvehjem Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin–Madison, 13 November 1999 through 09 January 2000 Literature: Panczenko, Russell, and Theodore F. Wolff, Wildeworld: the Art of John Wilde, Hudson Hills Press, 1999 Wilde, John and Lisa Wainwright, Things of Nature and the Nature of Things: John Wilde in the McClain Collection, Chazen Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin–Madison, 2006, pl. 15 Catalog Note: John Wilde's Work Reconsidered: Love after Murder (1989) is a macabre journey through the artist's mind, bringing violence and sex together in a Wisconsin landscape of lustful destruction. Wearing a harlequin leotard, a man engages in foreplay with a woman who is pleasuring herself. Did he (or they?) dismember the body that lies in pieces among numerous potential implements of murder and mayhem? And what do the non-sequitur objects, which confuse and obfuscate, mean in the larger scheme of this surrealism? Sometimes in Wilde's work a murder scene is not literally a murder scene, but here it is nonetheless disturbing and thought-provoking.
