Irving Ramsey Wiles Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1861 - d. 1948

(b.1861; d.1948) American painter. In 1879, at the age of eighteen Irving Wiles met William Merritt Chase, the important American Impressionist painter, who would become his teacher, mentor and friend. Wiles enrolled in the New York Art Students League and studied there for two years. In 1882 he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After he returned to New York he assumed a teaching post at the Art Students League; opened a studio in 1887, where he gave painting lessons; and assisted his father’s art school in upstate New York. Wiles painted in a painterly impressionist style. His figures appear to be lost in contemplation, within a well-defined, solitary space. Wiles focused on developing light and shadow within his work. He once said that “Color is whatever light makes it, and light changes and transforms everything—color, line, everything. Light is beauty.” (The Art of Irving Ramsey Wiles, p.18).* This fascination with light can be seen in his paintings and created enigmatic and emotionally charged moments within a single painting. The majority of his works are portraits. Wiles’ skill with portraiture made him famous and in 1910 Knoedler Gallery gave Wiles his first solo exhibition. Towards the end of his life he spent more time in Peconic, NY, on Long Island, and produced more landscape scenes, although his focus was always in portraiture. Max Weyl (1837 - 1914) Oil on Canvas, Signed Lower Right, Measures ( 8 x 10 inches ) w/frame ( 15 x 17 inches ) The story of Max Weyl's life includes his evolution from a watchmaker too shy to hang his paintings in his own shop window, to finally doing so, and having a major collector see the work and buy it, thus launching the artist in Washington, D.C. But, in the end, Weyl would begin to copy his own, too successful landscapes.Essentially self-taught, Weyl would draw on three major influences in his art, from Hudson River School through Barbizon School to the American painter George Inness.Born near Wurttemberg, Germany in Muhlen-am-Neckar in 1837, Weyl was a watchmaker's apprentice there, eventually opening his own jewelry store in 1861 in Washington after emigrating to the United States.

The Chapellier Galleries sometimes acted as sole agents for the works in artists' estates; the Robert Henri estate, a notable example. Tagged in the Smithsonian archives under Chapellier Galleries are Robert Frederick Blum, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri, John Frederick Kensett, Everett Shinn and Irving Ramsey Wiles. His estate was inherited by three daughters in 1978. A portion of the estate was descended by marriage to John Rosenberger who operated Rosenberger Galleries on Long Island. All Chapellier labeled and or exhibited items descend from the Georges Chapellier Estate. The Smithsonian Archives of American Art summarize the gallery as: Galleries founded in 1916 in Brussels and London; in 1923 in New York City...Chapellier Galleries collected primarily important American paintings 1840-1940, and represented virtually all significant American painters of the period in their collections. Items with a narrow yellow striped hand written label appear to be Rosenberger labels, some of former Chapellier material - however the later yellow label Rosenberger inscriptions of Chapellier inventory do not always match prior Chapellier citations. Some items, including many not cited specifically as Chapellier, may have other sources than Chapellier by Rosenberger. By descent in the Long Island family.
