    H. WILHELMI (1816-1902), Coast near Sorrento, around 1850,

    Est: €600 - €800

Heinrich Wilhelmi (1816 Xanten - 1902 Düsseldorf): Coast near Sorrento with monk on the shore, c. 1850, Oil Technique: Oil on Paper Inscription: Inscribed on the support: "Bei Sorrent / H. Wilhelmi". Date: c. 1850 Description: This painting by the German painter Heinrich Wilhelmi (c. 1816-1902) was created around 1850. It shows a spectacular view of the coast near Sorrento on the Gulf of Naples with the imposing buildings and a monk below two tall pine trees in the foreground. Heinrich Wilhelmi always succeeded in capturing a very special mood in his paintings, which he executed in a pastel-like colour palette. In this painting, the towering pine trees serve as a so-called repoussoir to direct the viewer's gaze into the distance. Particularly atmospheric effects are created by the colour gradient of the sky and the deep blue colour of the water surface. The presence of the monk in the depiction refers to the monastery in Sorrento. Keywords: Italy, Gulf of Naples, Sorrento, Coast, Architecture, Monk, Mid 19th Century, 19th century, Realism, Landscape, Italy, Size: Paper: 17,5 cm x 22,5 cm (6,9 x 8,9 in)

Öl/Lwd.; R. u. sign.; 37 cm x 49 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas. Signed.
