Wilkes (Benjamin) One Hundred and Twenty Copper-Plates of English Moths and Butterflies, second edition, 120 hand-coloured plates, 1773.

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

Wilkes (Benjamin) One Hundred and Twenty Copper-Plates of English Moths and Butterflies, second edition, list of subscribers,120 exquisite hand-coloured plates, plate IX misnumbered XI, occasional light offsetting, foxing to a handful of plates, a couple of small stains to p.61 of text, contemporary ink signature of Sarah Tyrconnel to head of title, modern half calf over marbled boards, spine ruled in gilt with red morocco label, 4to, [Hagen 289.2; Lisney 186; Nissen ZBI 4410a], for Benjamin White, 1773. ⁂ Beautiful work depicting butterflies, moths and their larvae against extensive backgrounds of their plant food sources, these plants after drawings by Ehret and van Huysum. The short 2pp. list of subscribers includes Joseph Dandridge (who gave Wilkes open access to his private collection of entomological specimens), Dr Christopher Jacob Trew (who died 4 years before the book was published), and Sir Hans Sloane (who likewise had died some 20 years earlier). This would suggest that the list was perhaps gleaned from the original edition, which had appeared in 1747-49. Sarah Carpenter, née Hussey Delaval, Countess of Tyrconnel, (1763-1800), second wife of 5th Earl of Tyrconnel, and mistress of Frederick Duke of York. She later left her husband to live with the Earl of Strathmore but died of a cold aged 37, whereupon Strathmore embarked upon an affair with Sarah's nineteen year-old daughter.

  • Wilkes - Lot of 22 Entomology Engravings
    Jul. 30, 2022

Wilkes - Lot of 22 Entomology Engravings

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

This originally hand-colored engraving is from Benjamin Wilkes's English Moths and Butterflies, representing their changes into the Caterpillar, Chrysalis, and Fly States, and the Plants, Flowers, and Fruits, whereon they feed. Coloured with great exactness from the subjects themselves. With a Natural History of the Moths and Butterflies, describing the method of managing, preserving, and feeding them... This is the second edition that was published in London by Benjamin White in 1773. This is considered one of the most beautifully illustrated works on English butterflies and moths. Most of the botanicals were after drawings by George Ehret and Jacob van Huysum. The engravings show the complete life cycles of individual species. "Benjamin Wilkes was one of the most significant of the group of eighteenth-century 'aurelians' which established British entomology in the direction it was to follow for well over a century." (Wilkinson, Benjamin Wilkes, the British Aurelian p. 4) Henry Baker notes in the preface, "As to the Plants, Flowers and Fruits, he [Wilkes] declares himself under the highest obligation to a most curious Naturalist, and worthy member of the Royal Society of London, whose costly and valuable Collection is known to the learned world, and esteemed as it derserves. This Gentleman has generously permitted him to make use of many excellent Paintings of these subjects, which were taken from Nature by those two celebrated Artists Mr. George Dennis [sic] Ehret, and Mr. Jacobus van Heysum [sic], and executed with the utmost Judgment and Command of Pencil, so that he could hardly doubt but that the true Copies of them would give great Pleasure to the Lovers of Botany, whom he has endeavoured to entertain with all the Variety he could introduce."

    Wilkes - Rose & Moth Metamorphosis. 62

    Est: $150 - $300
