          A poignant scene, "Birds in the forest" oil on canvas. Provenance: Acquired at Richard Bourne in '88 and Exhibited at Vose Galleries in Boston in 1948. Robert David Wilkie specialized in landscape, genre, still life and bird paintings; he was an illustrator and a teacher. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Wilkie spent most of his career at Boston & Swampscott in Massachusetts. From 1896-99, he painted over a hundred watercolor scenes from Dickens' novels. Man and woman in the foreground left, single male figure in lower center who appears to have surveying equipment. Signed "Wilkie" lower right. Mid-19th c. Provenance: Robert A Goldstein. Size: sight is 6.25" X 4", frame is 16" X 14" CONDITION: Watercolor apparently fine, not examined out of frame.
