Sir David Wilkie RA (1785-1841) The Dreamer Pencil and watercolour on paper, 12.7 x 17.8 cm (6 x 6¾) Titled in pencil, dated Dublin, August 12th 1835 Provenance: Colnaghis, London; Private collection, Channel Islands At the height of his immense fame as one of the most famous British artists of the nineteenth century, David Wilkie visited Ireland in the late summer of 1835 and The Dreamer is one of a series of drawings he executed in Dublin as part of a proposed visual exploration of Irish history and culture, As his early biographer records: it was suggested to Wilkie that Irish history, domestic as well as national, had failed to attract the pencils of the recording brethren of the easel. At this date, he continued, Maclise had scarcely begun to embody the creations with which he has since illustrated Ireland. And so with a picture or two of a national kind in his head, the painter departed for Ireland and reached Dublin about the middle of August where he made sketches from scenes and characters such as he reckoned would unite well into a picture. The first of these pencil sketches done from Dublin street characters and other notable personages, as recorded in the Life of the Artist of 1843, was the present work 1) The Dreamer. Others in the sequence included 2) The Holy Water; 4) The Nuns Darling; 8) The Carmelite. (Allan Cunningham, The Life of Sir David Wilkie.3 Vols, London, 1843, Vol. 3, p. 99). Wilkies trip to Ireland can be followed through a sequence of dated drawings. The day after he drew The Dreamer, for example, on 13 August, he drew an Irish Baptism (British Museum, 1885,0711.29700); clearly the overt religiosity of the populace fascinated this son of the manse. However, Wilkies work outside the capital ultimately proved more fruitful than these Dublin drawings. Of the sketches made in various parts of the island The Smuggling Still at Work and the Peep-o-Day Boy were translated into major oils (National Gallery, Edinburgh, 1840; Tate, 18356, exhibited 1836). But the freshness of observed reality on display here, as Wilkie sketches a sleeping and dreaming book vendor, makes for a hugely appealing and very rare Irish work by this great Scottish artist. He painted successfully in a wide variety of genres, including historical scenes, portraits, including formal royal ones, and scenes from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar, returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter". He was Principal Painter in Ordinary to King William IV and Queen Victoria. Apart from royal portraits, his best-known painting today is probably The Chelsea Pensioners reading the Waterloo Dispatch of 1822 in Apsley House. In November 1809 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, when he had hardly attained the age prescribed by its laws, and in February 1811 he became a full Academician. In 1812 he opened an exhibition of his collected works in Pall Mall, but the experiment was financially unsuccessful.

Instead, he was known for his liberal views; a staunch advocate for the abolition of the slave trade, Catholic emancipation and the removal of legal restrictions on Jewish people. Indeed, he was a man at the forefront of social change at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The present oil sketch was likely executed by Wilkie in early 1832, as a preliminary idea for his full-length portrait of the Prince in his capacity as Earl of Inverness, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1833 and presented to Queen Victoria the same year (Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace, RCIN 405420). Wilkie had by this date developed a rough, painterly style for his life-sized works, which owed something to Rembrandt and a great deal to Reynolds and Raeburn. Between this sketch for the portrait and the final version a few changes were made; for instance, the sitter is shown holding rather than wearing his chieftain's plumed bonnet. In both works the key note is the romance of Caledonian splendour, the fierce, proud and independent spirit of the Highlander, something which entered the mainstream of European culture at this date. Basil Hall (1788-1844), the purchaser of the sketch at Wilkie’s Estate Sale in 1842, was an officer in the Royal Navy and a noted traveller. As part of a diplomatic mission to China in 1813, he explored Java and undertook surveys of the west coast of Korea and the outlying Ryukyu Islands of Japan. In 1817 he was able to interview Napoleon, who had been an acquaintance of his father’s, during his exile on St. Helena. His final voyage before retirement from the Navy took him to the west coast of South America in 1820. On his return to England in 1823 Hall published his journal under the title Extracts from a Journal Written on the Coasts of Chile, Peru and Mexico. In addition to these far-flung adventures, the Edinburgh-born Hall was part of the circle that included Wilkie and the great writer Sir Walter Scott, a connection that led to his purchase of Wilkie’s portrait shortly before his own death in 1844.

His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar, returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter". He was Principal Painter in Ordinary to King William IV and Queen Victoria. Apart from royal portraits, his best-known painting today is probably The Chelsea Pensioners reading the Waterloo Dispatch of 1822 in Apsley House. In November 1809 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, when he had hardly attained the age prescribed by its laws, and in February 1811 he became a full Academician. In 1812 he opened an exhibition of his collected works in Pall Mall, but the experiment was financially unsuccessful.

Murrey 1843, p. 67 To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Sir David Wilkies works by Hamish Miles, currently being edited by Alex Kidson. We are grateful to Alex Kidson for identifying the present lot as the previously lost portrait of Captain Andrew Christie and pointing out that this was first recorded by the artist's biographer Allan Cunningham (1784-1842) shortly after Wilkie's death. In his Life of Sir David Wilkie (see Literature), Cunningham lists portraits of the "two sons of Mr.Christie, banker in Cupar" in a context implying a date of about 1804 for both. The sitter, Andrew Christie (20th Sept. 1788-1821) was the son of Andrew Christie (1765-1831) of Ferrybank, a Provost of Cupar and a banker, and Margaret Dempster (1769-1842). He was commissioned into the Honourable East India Company and departed for India, where he arrived on the 16th of May 1806, dying there in 1821. These circumstances along with Wilkies departure for London in the spring of 1805 must explain the unfinished state of the portrait. Its pendant portrait (see Provenance & Exhibited) of the sitter's twin brother, Charles Christie (1788-1870) (see illustration) was however completed and is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art where it was long considered to be by Raeburn. When that picture along with the present portrait were acquired from Horsburgh (see Provenance) in 1900 by Agnew, the latters stock books show that they initially recorded both portraits as by Wilkie, only later however crossing out the attribution and amending it to Raeburn. A portrait of the sitters brother-in-laws brother, Alexander Aitken (see Provenance) was also painted at this period by Wilkie, which picture remained with his descendants until sold at Sothebys on 13th April 1994 (lot 34). It was then resold at Sothebys on 11th June 2020 when it realised 30,000 USD (with premium). The current owner of this lot is descended from Jane Christie, the sister of the sitter in the present portrait. The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The canvas has deformations across the surface, notably at the upper left corner. The lining canvas is brittle at the tacking edges. The painting has suffered from knocks with a few small holes and circular impact cracks. The painting is unfinished but may also have been overcleaned, there are areas of abrasion in some of the thicker paint passages. The painting has an uneven varnish layer with some glossy, vertical drips of yellowed varnish. In other areas there is a matte haze across the surface. There is a light layer of surface dirt present.

C. 1835. An absolutely stunning vintage early 19th century oil on canvas painting entitled "La Promenade," attributed to Sir David Wilkie. Depicting sweeping highlands acting as a dramatic backdrop to an elderly man positioned in the foreground. The man is shown promenading a small black pony with his young daughter sitting upon it. Featured in the foreground are the three family pets. This painting is well defined with beautifully costumed figures and detailed with marvelous animals. Colors of the painting are vivid and sharp. Painting is signed in the lower-right corner. This masterpiece is framed in a magnificent gold gilted ornate molded wood frame. Condition: The canvas is very clean and has very minor age-related craquelure, with some old repairs and touch-ups in the middle margin. Frame shows some minor wear commensurate with age and use, some cracking and chipping, otherwise good. Comes with certificate of authenticity.
