    Norman Wilkinson (1878 - 1971) British, Etching

    Est: $100 - $150

Norman Wilkinson (1878 - 1971) British, etching titled "The Evening Rise". Artist signed in pencil on back right. Etching of a large lake sitting at the foothills of a mountain. It features two fishermen, one sitting and one standing in a row boat which rests in the middle of the water. Overall Size: 16 1/8 x 21 1/2 in. Sight Size: 9 1/2 x 12 5/8 in. #5628 Norman Wilkinson was a British artist in oil, watercolour and drypoint*, usually of marine subjects. An illustrator and poster artist, he also made an important contribution in both World Wars. Educated at Berkhamsted School and St Paul’s Cathedral choir school, he had little training in art but largely developed his style through his maritime career. As a poster designer, he reached his highest artistic level. His posters were well-planned and executed in broad tones of colour with a skillful use of black to strengthen the design. He made his first poster (of the Irish steamer crossing from Holyhead to Dublin) in 1905. It was the first to illustrate the product as just one element of a broader landscape and its revolutionary design was a major influence in the development of the pictorial poster. The artist went on to organize the celebrated commissioning of poster designs from members of the Royal Academy for the London Midland and Scottish Railway company in the 1920s. Through the dissemination of his posters to railway stations, schools, and government offices throughout the world, he became one of the most familiar artists in the British Empire. He was elected Hon. Marine Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1919 and P.R.I. in 1937. He was knighted in 1948 and appointed a CBE in 1948. The artist created a painting titled The Approach to Plymouth Harbour for the smoking room of the RMS Titanic, which sank with the ship. Prolific and long-lived, Wilkinson led an active and adventurous life until his death in 1971.

  • δ NORMAN WILKINSON (1878-1971) North Atlantic Convoy under escort with a Flower Class Corvette in dazzle camouflage

δ NORMAN WILKINSON (1878-1971) North Atlantic Convoy under escort with a Flower Class Corvette in dazzle camouflage δ NORMAN WILKINSON (1878-1971) North Atlantic Convoy under escort with a Flower Class corvette in dazzle camouflage Signed 'Norman Wilkinson' (lower right) Oil on canvas 15¾ x 23¾in. (40 x 60cm.) This picture forms part of Norman Wilkinson's War at Sea series and is believed the last one in private hands. As a Royal Navy volunteer in World War One, Wilkinson had become all too aware of the threat from Germany’s U-boats and decided he could use his artistic skills to protect Allied ships. Realising that it was impossible to paint a ship in a conventional camouflage instead, he proposed that the “extreme opposite” was the answer: Rather than trying to make a ship vanish, he developed a radical camouflage scheme that used bold shapes and violent contrasts of colour, the purpose being to confuse rather than conceal. After trials, the Admiralty agreed and Wilkinson was set up in Burlington House as head of the dazzle section with a team of artists producing designs on model hulls. All classes and types were catered for and amongst the largest projects was Titanic's sister ship Olympic (see previous lot) for which he had also produced stateroom designs before the War. Good overall condition.

NORMAN WILKINSON United Kingdom, 1878-1971 Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hinde. Signed and dated lower left "Norman Wilkinson 1907". Provenance: Bonhams, New Bond Street, London, January 2002. Acquired from the above at that sale by Richard Kelton. Sir Francis Drake's English galleon Golden Hinde is depicted on her triumphant return to England after completing her 1577-1580 circumnavigation of the world. This view likely represents Golden Hinde 's subsequent journey to London at the Queen's request after the ship's initial arrival in her home port of Plymouth. Launched as Pelican in 1576, this vessel became Drake's flagship on his 1577 raid into the Pacific that became England's first circumnavigation. Drake was knighted by Queen Elizabeth on the deck of Golden Hinde at Deptford Dockyard on April 4, 1581. From the Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts. Oil on board, 18" x 15". Framed 24.25" x 21".
