In older gilt wood frame with applied shell molding, Oil on panel measuring 11x8 and in frame 15x12x1.50. George Burrell Willcock, also known as George Burrell Willcox. Willcock was born in 1811 in Exeter and studied landscape. He died in 1852, so he had a short career, painting as a professional only from the 1840's until about 1851. Willcock worked in London in his studio on Albany Street, Regent's Park between the years 1846 - 1851, and exhibited a great deal in the London Galleries during this period. His works were accepted at the Royal Academy, where 12 of his paintings were exhibited. His works were also exhibited at the Suffolk Street Galleries and the British Institute, and altogether he exhibited 88 of his paintings at various Galleries during his lifetime. Willcock studied under John Constable, although he did not imitate his style. Many of his paintings were of Devonshire and Suffolk subjects, which he painted with a certain charm. An example of Willcock's work may be seen in the Tate Gallery in London. The majority of his work was painted in Devon. The influence of his mentor, the artist James Stark, is evident in all of his work.
