Ernst Wille, Mixed Media on Canvas, ‘Schwarze Sängerin’, 1986

      Est: €900 - €1,170

Oil and collage on canvas Germany, 1986 Ernst Wille (1916-2005) – German painter Signed and dated lower right ‘Ernst Wille 86•68 ‘ Labelled with the address stamp of the artist on the verso of the stretcher; further dated ‘1986’, titled ‘SCHWARZE SÄNGERIN’ and inscribed ‘68’ Overall dimensions: 72 x 72 cm Very good condition Characteristic painting by Ernst Wille, whose compositions oscillate between the poles of figuration and abstraction In Germany, Ernst Wille’s oeuvre plays an individual and very special role in art. His works are based on music and color that were identified as central aspects of his artistic approach. The present work is titled ‘Schwarze Sängerin’ (Black Singer) and surprisingly shows a very colorful female head with big blue eyes, plump red lips and wavy hair before the typography of a collaged newspaper page, which endows the abstracted background with a certain spatial depth. The composition is characterized by broad, energetic and partly impasto strokes that are reminiscent of the dynamic sounds of an exhilarating musical or vocal play. The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘Ernst Wille 86·68‘. It is in very good condition with minimal traces of wear. A few tiny and hardly noticeable color losses to the upper area of the collage. The stretcher is framed with simple studio slats, measuring 72 x 72 cm. Ernst Wille (1916-2005) Ernst Wille received his artistic training at the ‘Werkschule’ in Cologne as well as at the Art Academy in Munich. Here, he became a student of Karl Caspar (1879-1956), Hans Gött (1883-1974) and Adolf Schinnerer (1876-1949). His works particularly included drafts for frescoes, sgraffiti and mosaics. Besides, Wille also worked with metal. Various study trips lead led him to France and Holland. His works may be found, for instance, at the city hall in Cologne, the ‘Neue Galerie – Sammlung Ludwig’ in Aachen and at the ‘Volkshochschule’ in Cologne.
