Williams reminisced that It was there that for the first time I discovered myself as an artist. Before that it was all amateur activity...I have to thank the Warrau people now for my work as an artist. Through immersing himself in their language, customs, and rituals, he adopted glyphic symbols that he continued to incorporate into his work throughout his career. The title of the present painting, Hosororo, refers to a region in Northern Guyana that Williams would have known during his stay with the Warrau. Loosely translated as Pouring Water the name refers to a series of small waterfalls in the region.

The exhibitions Modern Art in the United States (1956) and New American Painting (1959), both at the Tate Gallery, London, had a lasting impact on his work. It was at these exhibitions that he was able to experience the works of the American Abstract Expressionists in the flesh. An admirer of Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock, Williams found an exciting and unique way to celebrate his Guyanan heritage in the bold and expressionistic techniques of Abstract Expressionism. The title of the present work reflects Williams's interest in the ancient cultures of South America. It refers to the pre-Inca civilisation of Chimu, who lived in the North of present day Peru up until the late 15th Century.

Aubrey Williams, British/Guyanese 1926-1990 - Sun Stone, 1968; oil on canvas, signed lower righ

      Est: £800 - £1,200

Aubrey Williams, British/Guyanese 1926-1990 - Sun Stone, 1968; oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Aubrey' and signed, titled and dated on the reverse 'Aubrey Williams 68 Sun Stone' , 75 x 148.5 cm (unframed) (ARR) Note: Aubrey Williams, combines abstract impressionist tendencies with the forms and symbols of the pre-Colombian art of the indigenous inhabitants of the Americas. This piece is therefore typical of Williams’s style, with his bold handling of the paint producing abstract forms which convey a sense of energy and urgency. The influence of artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, whom Williams himself credited with shaping his artistic style, can clearly be seen in this piece. He moved to London in the 1950s and quickly became one of the leading members of the avant-garde movement there, especially through his connection with the artist Denis Bowen. Williams co-founded the Caribbean Artists’ Movement with other London-based Caribbean artists and intellectuals. His artwork is currently in the collection of the Tate in London, the Arts Council, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, and the Bristol Museum and Gallery, among others. Aubrey Williams, S.American, 1926-1990, "Cosmos I", gouache on paper, signed lower right, verso signed and dated 77' Biography:The late Arif Mardin, 1932-2006, a long-term resident of Manhattan's iconic San Remo apartment house, was a Turkish-American music producer and colleague of Ahmet Ertegun, founder of the legendary Atlantic Records. Born in Istanbul into a renowned aristocratic family that included statesmen, diplomats and leaders in the civic, military and business sectors of the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic, Mardin instead chose to pursue his passion for music. He worked at Atlantic Records for over 30 years, as both an assistant, but also producer, arranger, studio manager, and senior vice president, before moving to EMI and serving as vice president and general manager of Manhattan Records. His collaborations include working with Queen, The Bee Gees, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Bette Midler, Laura Branigan, Chaka Khan, Scritti Politti, Phil Collins, Daniel Rodriguez, Norah Jones, Richard Marx, Culture Club and Howard Jones. Mardin is credited with discovering the distinctive falsetto of Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees which reignited the band's career and became a familiar trademark throughout the disco era. In his career of more than 40 years, he collected over 40 gold and platinum albums, over 15 Grammy nominations and 12 Grammy Awards. In 1990, Arif Mardin was inducted into the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. A full length biographical documentary "The Greatest Ears in Town: The Arif Mardin Story" was released in 2010.The two-hour film is built around footage shot in 2006 while Mardin was at work on what would become his final recording, “All My Friends Are Here,” a star-studded collection featuring artists he guided to some of their finest performances, singing songs he’d written over the years.
