    Est: $500 - $750

BYRD WILLIAMS I (American, 1913-1985) Woman Shopper (Fort Worth, TX), 1938 Silver gelatin on paper 10 x 12 inches (25.4 x 30.5 cm) Ed. 15 PROVENANCE: Dutch Phillips & Co., Fort Worth (label verso). Byrd Williams I was the father of a dynasty of Fort Worth photographers, including Byrd Williams II and Byrd Williams III, culminating in prominent Dallas photographer Byrd Williams IV. Byrd I captured many aspects of Fort Worth, but his images of daily urban life during the Great Depression are among his most compelling and collectible photographs. In Diner Waitress (1938), he allows the worn face, tired eyes, and no-nonsense attitude of the diner waitress to expose the realities of working people during this difficult period. In Woman Shopper (1938), the bustling downtown is a backdrop for the dark figure, and implies that window shopping might be all she can afford in 1930s Fort Worth.
